Bruno Lage Sacked As Benfica Move To Secure Mourinho

Published

on

Jose Mourinho is on the brink of making an emotional return to Benfica, 25 years after his brief first spell in charge of the Portuguese giants.

The move comes in the wake of the club’s stunning Champions League defeat to Qarabag, which sealed the fate of head coach Bruno Lage.

Reports from Portugal suggest that negotiations between Mourinho and Benfica are at an advanced stage, with only contractual details left to finalize.

The 62-year-old is expected to be unveiled before the weekend and could be on the bench when Benfica face Vila das Aves on Saturday.

Mourinho’s managerial career famously began with Benfica in 2000, where he took charge of just 11 matches before resigning.

He then went on to achieve global success, winning the UEFA Cup and Champions League with Porto before managing Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Roma, and most recently, Fenerbahce.

Confirming the urgency of the appointment, Benfica president Rui Costa told Portuguese media:
“Regarding the next coach, we expect to have the new one on the bench at Vila das Aves next Saturday.”

Bruno Lage’s downfall was sealed after his side squandered a two-goal lead at home to Qarabag, a result described by fans and pundits as one of the most humiliating nights in the club’s recent European history.
