Canada Humble Nigeria’s Flamingos 4–1 In U-17 Women’s World Cup Opener
Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, began their 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign on a disappointing note after suffering a 4–1 defeat to Canada in their opening Group B match on Sunday.
The Canadians made their intentions clear from the start, with Gabriella Istocki putting them ahead just two minutes into the encounter.
The early goal unsettled the Nigerian side, who struggled to find their rhythm in the opening stages.

However, the Flamingos grew into the game and were rewarded in the 30th minute when Queen Joseph fired home a fine equalizer to level the score at 1–1 before halftime.
After the break, the North Americans regained control, pressing high and exploiting Nigeria’s defensive lapses.
Milisa Kekic restored Canada’s lead in the 73rd minute with a composed finish, before Julia Amireh struck twice in the closing stages — in the 80th and 86th minutes — to seal a convincing 4–1 win.
The result leaves Nigeria at the bottom of Group B, needing a positive result in their next fixture against France on Wednesday to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Meanwhile, Canada will face Samoa, and another victory will guarantee them a place in the knockout stage.
The Flamingos, who reached the semifinals in the 2022 edition of the tournament, will have to regroup quickly if they hope to revive their campaign.
