Chief Imam Of Kebbi’s Oldest Mosque Resigns
The Kebbi Government has officially approved the resignation of Sheikh Rufa’i Ibrahim, the Chief Imam of the historic Wala Mosque in Birnin Kebbi.
Alhaji Muhammad Sani-Aliyu, the Commissioner of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, announced this during a press briefing on Sunday.
He urged the Gwandu Emirate Council to begin the process of appointing a new Chief Imam for the Wala Jumu’at Mosque.
Sani-Aliyu additionally backed the selection of Mallam Mammam Nata’ala as the interim Chief Imam, following the Birnin Kebbi Local Government Council’s instruction. He explained that the former Chief Imam’s resignation, tendered for personal reasons, was acknowledged by the local government council and endorsed by the state government.
The commissioner refuted speculations suggesting that Sheikh Ibrahim resigned due to monetary disputes or feeling shortchanged by his subordinates.
He said “Gov. Nasir Idris in his compassionate disposition gave financial support to Imam (leaders) of Jumu’at Mosques in the state to assist them cushion the effect of present economic hardship in the country and help those around them.
“Government has never received any report of sharp practice in the sharing of the money; therefore, the allegation of short changing the former chief imam by his aides, is untrue.”
The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmad-Birnin-Kebbi, in his remarks dismissed any political motivations behind the situation.
He emphasized that in a democratic society, an Imam is free to hold political views different from the ruling administration without fear of reprisal.
He said “We are in a democratic setting, Imam can profess political ideology different from the ruling administration without molestation or harassment. Our governor is all accommodating, every indigene of Kebbi is dear to him.
“Those peddling rumour of political differences as a reason for the resignation of the chief imam are wrong. Sheikh Ibrahim relinquished his position on personal volition.”
