Controversy As Kano Senator Reveals N21m Monthly Pay Amid Salary Debate
As the debate intensifies over the transparency of federal lawmakers’ salaries in light of Nigeria’s economic challenges, new revelations continue to emerge about their actual take-home pay.
Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has revealed that he earns a monthly sum of N21 million in salary and allowances.

This disclosure comes amidst growing public scrutiny, fueled by former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s accusations that members of the National Assembly have been inflating their salaries and allowances in violation of existing laws.
Speaking during an interview with the BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday, Sumaila clarified that his official pay package is set by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), the statutory body responsible for determining the salaries and allowances of political officeholders.
He said, “My monthly salary is less than N1million. After deductions, the figure comes down to a little over N600,000. Given the increase effected, in the Senate, each Senator gets N21million every month as running cost.”
The controversy surrounding lawmakers’ salaries shows no sign of abating, as the recent disclosure by the Kano South Senator contradicts the official stance of the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).
Recall that RMAFC on Tuesday stated that each Senator receives a total monthly salary and allowances amounting to N1,063,860.
The breakdown provided by the commission includes a basic salary of N168,866.70, motor vehicle fueling and maintenance allowance of N126,650, N42,216.66 for a personal assistant, N126,650 for domestic staff, N50,660 for entertainment, N50,660 for utilities, N25,330 for newspapers/periodicals, N42,216.66 for wardrobe allowance, N8,443.33 for house maintenance, and N422,166.66 as constituency allowance.
RMAFC Chairman Muhammed Bello Shehu addressed the ongoing controversy over the actual salaries and allowances of National Assembly members, providing clarity on the issue.
This comes in the wake of recent allegations by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who claimed that federal lawmakers set their own salaries and allowances in violation of existing laws.
Adding to the debate, former Senator Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th Senate, previously revealed that each Senator receives a monthly running cost of N13.5 million, in addition to the N750,000 monthly salary prescribed by the commission.
