Ekiti Attack: Sowore Tracks Stolen Phones Near Governor’s Office, Demands CCTV Footage

Published

on

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has disclosed that two mobile phones allegedly stolen from members of his team during Friday’s attack in Ado-Ekiti have been traced to locations near the Ekiti State Governor’s Office and Fajuyi Park.

Sowore made the disclosure in a post on X on Sunday, November 1, 2026, while renewing his demand for the release of CCTV footage from Tawakalitu Restaurant, where he and members of his team were attacked on October 30.

According to him, one of the stolen devices was traced to a location directly opposite the office of Governor Biodun Oyebanji, while another was located opposite Fajuyi Park in Ado-Ekiti.

Describing the discoveries as disturbing, Sowore questioned why the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) had yet to release the CCTV footage allegedly seized from the restaurant.

“This morning, we tracked two of the devices violently robbed from members of our team during the brutal attack in Ado-Ekiti on Friday, October 30, 2026, and the locations are deeply disturbing,” he wrote.

“One phone was traced to a location directly opposite the office of the Executive Governor of Ekiti State, while our other devices were located opposite Fajuyi Park in Ado-Ekiti,” he added.

The activist subsequently renewed his demand for the release of the surveillance footage, insisting that the recordings from the restaurant should be made public.

“Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force and the DSS have yet to release the CCTV footage seized from Tawakalitu Restaurant, where we were attacked.

“RELEASE THE CCTV FOOTAGE NOW!” he demanded.

The latest disclosure follows an attack on Sowore and members of his entourage at Tawakalitu Restaurant in Ado-Ekiti on Friday, shortly after the activist participated in a radio interview in the state.

Sowore had alleged that armed men attacked his team, assaulted some members and dispossessed them of their personal belongings, including mobile phones.

The incident generated controversy after the Ekiti State Police Command initially described it as an altercation involving Sowore and some individuals, while the activist maintained that his team was violently attacked.

The police subsequently announced the arrest of 11 suspects in connection with the incident.

According to the police, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad arrested the suspects at their hideouts in the Atikankan area of Ado-Ekiti at about 10 p.m. on October 30.

Items reportedly recovered during the operation included 13 mobile phones, two walkie-talkies, seven ATM cards, eight international passports, vehicle keys and other belongings.

The police said investigations were ongoing to establish the roles of the suspects and determine their possible involvement in the incident.

Sowore’s latest disclosure has renewed calls for the release of the restaurant’s CCTV footage, which he believes could provide further evidence about the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Arrest Buhari Too, Sowore Reacts To Emefiele's Arrest

Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has demanded the release of CCTV footage showing the attack on him and members of his team in Ado-Ekiti, while questioning the alleged relationship between the Ekiti State Government and a suspected gang leader.

Sowore made the demands in a post on X on Sunday, November 1, 2026, while responding to the Ekiti State Government’s October 31 press release on the October 30 attack.

He also challenged Governor Biodun Oyebanji to explain an alleged warning issued by his Chief Security Officer, CSP Ayodele Akinlua, hours before the incident.

According to Sowore, Akinlua contacted a member of his team, Moyinoluwa Olowoyo, popularly known as Gigabytes, at approximately 7:30 a.m. on the day of the attack and warned that his safety could not be guaranteed if he proceeded with political activities in the state.

Sowore alleged that more than 100 armed thugs subsequently attacked him and members of his team in broad daylight, leaving several people injured and robbed.

Questioning the circumstances surrounding the warning, he asked:

“Why was the Governor’s Chief Security Officer warning that my safety could not be guaranteed hours before armed thugs descended on us? Who authorized that call? What did the Governor know, and when did he know it?”

The AAC presidential candidate accused the state government of failing to address the circumstances surrounding the attack, arguing that its response focused on questioning his motives rather than condemning the violence.

He also faulted the government’s description of the incident as an ordinary altercation, insisting that the attack involved armed political thugs.

Sowore further questioned the alleged relationship between the Ekiti State Government and Sola Adenijo, popularly known as Solar, whom he identified as the leader of the gang that attacked him and his team.

He alleged that Adenijo was on the state government’s payroll and challenged Governor Oyebanji to disclose whether the individual received payments, contracts, appointments, stipends or other financial benefits from the government, directly or indirectly.

“We challenge Governor Oyebanji and his government to publicly disclose whether Sola Adenijo receives payments, contracts, appointments, stipends, or any other financial benefits from the state government, directly or indirectly,” he stated.

Sowore maintained that a general denial of involvement by the government was insufficient without addressing the specific allegations.

He also demanded the immediate preservation, recovery and public release of CCTV recordings from the restaurant where the incident occurred and surrounding premises.

The activist urged the relevant authorities to secure the complete recordings, preserve the original files and release the footage without alteration, while protecting innocent bystanders.

“Let Nigerians see what happened. Let the footage establish whether this was the so-called ‘altercation’ being promoted by the Police and the State Government or a coordinated attack by armed political thugs,” he said.

Sowore further alleged that security operatives had attempted to remove CCTV recordings and demanded an explanation regarding who took possession of the footage, where it was being kept and why it had not been made public.

He also questioned the activities of security agencies before the attack, alleging that Department of State Services (DSS) operatives had disrupted his political meeting at a restaurant.

According to him, members of his team and security personnel attached to them were assaulted, with some security personnel allegedly disarmed during the incident.

Sowore also referenced a statement by MKD Araoye, lead organiser of the Ikogosi Marathon, announcing a ban on his participation in the event. He alleged that the development further raised questions about possible official involvement in the incident.

The AAC presidential candidate called for an independent and transparent investigation into the roles of the attackers, their alleged sponsors, the governor’s security personnel, the DSS and any police or DSS officers implicated in the incident.

He maintained that the investigation should examine eyewitness accounts, communication records, financial records and CCTV footage.

“The Ekiti State Government cannot investigate itself through press releases, insult the victims into silence, or manufacture an alternative account of an attack that left people injured,” he said.

Sowore insisted that the incident would not deter him from exercising his constitutional rights or participating in political activities.

He also challenged Governor Oyebanji to release the CCTV footage, explain the alleged warning from his Chief Security Officer and disclose the government’s relationship, if any, with Adenijo.

INEC Chairman Assures on 2027 Elections

Published

on

There is no plan to shift Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Joash Amupitan, made the declaration at an interactive meeting with staff members in the six states of the South-South geopolitical zone and an assessment of their readiness for the 2027 general elections, held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Saturday.

Amupitan maintained that the poll had been fixed with preparations in top gear, hence the commission would not alter the timetable. He insisted that the elections must be held as scheduled.

This comes amid claims by some political parties that INEC plans to shift forward the general elections.

But addressing the commission’s staff, including Resident Electoral Commissioners in the six states of the zone, Amupitan noted that the commission’s statutory timeline for the elections had been fixed and would not be changed for any reason.

According to him, the INEC was committed to delivering credible elections in line with the provisions of the law.

“Our statutory timeline is fixed. We will not change anything. The election must hold as scheduled,” the INEC boss declared.

Amupitan disclosed that the commission would pay special attention to Rivers State in the forthcoming elections due to its strategic position in the zone and because it has the highest number of registered voters in the South-South region.

He outlined that Rivers had 3,736,434 registered voters, followed by Delta State with 3,525,988; Edo, 2,865,263; Akwa Ibom, 2,566,198; Cross River, 1,928,978; and Bayelsa, 1,200,691.

Amupitan said the six states in the zone had a total of 15,823,550 registered voters, but that the electoral umpire would pay closer attention to Rivers because of its electoral significance in the region.

He stated, “With the 3,736,434 registered voters for Rivers State, the state leads the South-South. By this, the commission will put more attention to what happens in Rivers State. It is your duty to ensure that no voter is disenfranchised because of operational failures.”

Amupitan further said INEC had published the voters’ register online and at designated locations, adding that it had received over 5,000 claims relating to corrections, including names and dates of birth, and more than 600 objections, which were being addressed to ensure a credible voter register ahead of the elections.

The INEC boss announced that the final voters’ register would be released on December 15, even as he reiterated the commission’s determination to resolve all outstanding issues before the deadline.

While noting that the commission had initially considered revalidating the voters’ register upon assuming office, he said the idea was dropped following concerns that the exercise would be too close to the general elections.

He also expressed confidence in the commission’s capacity to conduct peaceful, transparent and credible elections, citing lessons learnt from recent off-cycle governorship elections, particularly the Osun State election.

Amupitan noted that the Osun election recorded the highest voter turnout in the history of off-cycle elections in the country and was adjudged locally and internationally as credible despite earlier security concerns.

“Osun State elections gave us the confidence that we can achieve this despite the noise. It is good that we had a series of those elections before the general elections because we learn lessons from every election,” the INEC Chairman stated.

The INEC, he stated, would use the experience garnered from the off-cycle elections to improve its preparations for the 2027 general elections and expressed optimism that they would be better than the off-cycle polls.

He further said the commission was determined to conduct elections that would advance the country rather than create further challenges.

Amupitan said, “We will conduct elections that will move the nation forward and not an election that will bring it down.”

On the issue of security during the elections, he said the commission was working with security agencies, including the police and the Department of State Services, to guarantee the safety of voters, electoral personnel, ad hoc staff and election materials.

Amupitan further said that the INEC would not encourage Nigerians to collect their Permanent Voter Cards and subsequently fail to guarantee their safety when they turn out to vote.

“We want every part of Nigeria to be calm during the elections so that people can come out to vote. We will not tell them to take their PVCs and then will not guarantee their safety,” he said.

Amupitan dismissed fears that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and algorithms could determine the outcome of the 2027 elections, insisting Nigerians would determine the outcome and not AI.

According to him, “It is the people of Nigeria that will decide the outcome of the elections and not AI or any algorithms.”

He, however, warned about the growing cybersecurity threats associated with AI, noting that the commission would explore ways to deploy technology to protect its systems against possible attacks.

Amupitan said the INEC was also working to strengthen the security of its digital infrastructure, adding that the commission would not allow anyone to undermine its operations.

He urged staff of the commission across the South-South to remain committed to their responsibilities, stressing that the success and credibility of the elections would be determined by their conduct at the polling units and other field locations.

He also warned that any staff of the commission and its ad hoc staff, including members of the National Youth Service Corps, who tried to compromise the elections in their areas of assignment would be punished according to the law.
