Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Enugu State, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, shared that an intensified police operation had disrupted another kidnapping attempt along the same route.
The new incident took place on October 28, 2024, as police officers from the Unity Division engaged suspected kidnappers in a gunfight at the Neke-Uno axis of the Enugu/Opi/Nsukka Road.
Following a heated exchange, the suspects abandoned an AK-47 rifle, two magazines containing 22 rounds, and a chain of 39 rounds of live ammunition, fleeing with gunshot wounds.
Further police actions that night contributed to Ujam’s successful escape from captivity.
The Enugu State Police Command has since bolstered security along the Enugu/Opi/Nsukka Road.
“The Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has deployed additional personnel and resources to ensure the safety of commuters and the public,” stated Ndukwe.
He assured citizens that robust measures are in place to address security concerns along the route and across Enugu State.
Meanwhile, the police have refuted viral reports claiming that a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officer was kidnapped while traveling from Benue State along the same route, clarifying that no such incident has been reported.
As the police heighten efforts to dismantle criminal networks in the region, commuters have been encouraged to remain vigilant but reassured of their safety.
