Tragedy struck at the Amanwozuzu junction in Imo State as a family of eight lost their lives in a car accident while traveling home for New Year celebrations.

The incident occurred around 3 pm on Friday, causing distress in the area. The father, driving a Sienna vehicle with his wife and children, collided with a stationary truck loaded with rods.

Eyewitnesses and rescue officials revealed that the rods pierced the victims’ bodies, resulting in their immediate and tragic demise. Efforts were made to retrieve the lifeless bodies from the vehicle.

At the time of reporting, authorities from the Ikeduru Local Government Area Division had taken the deceased family’s bodies to a morgue.

Lucky Ahiole, the Chief Superintendent of Police and Divisional Police Officer overseeing Ikeduru LGA, stated that the tragedy occurred when the Sienna vehicle’s driver collided with a stationary truck parked at the roadside.

Ahiole said, “It is terrible. Eight died and we have taken them to a morgue. We had to break the Sienna vehicle to bring out the dead bodies. The rod pierced their eyes and bodies and even the children died.”

The account from an eyewitness stated that the stationary truck carrying rods had obstructed the road.

According to this witness, the tragedy might have been avoided if the truck hadn’t been parked on the road.
