FG Raises Alarm As Hepatitis Claims Lives, Drains ₦17.9tn From Economy
The Federal Government has disclosed that Nigeria incurs an annual economic loss of between ₦13.3 trillion and ₦17.9 trillion due to the widespread impact of hepatitis, a disease that also claims over 4,000 lives each year.
This revelation was made by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, during a press conference on Monday, as part of activities marking the 2025 World Hepatitis Day. The event carried the theme: “Hepatitis: Let’s Break It Down.”
Represented by the ministry’s Director of Public Health, Pate painted a grim picture of the national health crisis posed by hepatitis, a viral infection that primarily attacks the liver and is responsible for numerous fatalities.

“Nigeria bears a significant burden, with over 20 million individuals infected with Hepatitis B and C. Of this number, 18.2 million live with Hepatitis B, while 2.5 million are affected by Hepatitis C,” he said.
He added, “Over 8.1 per cent of Nigerians are infected with Hepatitis B, and despite the availability of vaccines and treatments, more than 90 per cent remain undiagnosed.
These individuals unknowingly pass the virus to others, including children.
Symptoms are often mistaken for malaria and self-medicated, while the virus continues to damage the liver, sometimes resulting in cancer or liver failure. Tragically, 4,252 Nigerians die annually due to liver cancer from untreated hepatitis.”
In response, the government is initiating Project 365, a national campaign that will span one year, targeting every constituency in the country for hepatitis screening, diagnosis, and treatment. The aim is to drastically reduce transmission and eliminate Hepatitis C entirely by 2030.
Other proposed interventions include increased funding for hepatitis programs, the creation of a dedicated Viral Elimination Fund, tax incentives for local drug manufacturers, and regulatory reforms to improve access to treatment and diagnostics nationwide.
In a solidarity message, Dr. Oluyinka Olayemi, the National Coordinator of Africa CDC, lauded Nigeria’s effort and pledged continued support.
The message, delivered by Technical Officer Titilola Munkail, read: “We are hopeful that Nigeria will continue to lead as it has always done in the elimination of harmful diseases, setting the pace for others to follow.”
Similarly, Nigeria’s Presidential Ambassador for Hepatitis Control and former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, applauded the joint efforts of the Ministry of Health, WHO, stakeholders, and other partners. Represented by Adeyeye Ajayi, Gowon called on Nigerians to unite in combating hepatitis.
“Let us reaffirm our commitment to eliminating viral hepatitis by 2030. I urge everyone to join hands in this fight, promoting awareness, education, and collective action. May World Hepatitis Day 2025 inspire hope, unity, and progress toward a hepatitis-free Nigeria and the world over,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, the National Coordinator of the National AIDS and STDs Control Programme, Dr. Adebobola Bashorun, explained that Project 365 will operate in collaboration with the National Assembly to drive testing, vaccination, and treatment at the grassroots.
Dr. Bashorun emphasized the importance of behavioral change in curbing transmission. According to him, Hepatitis B and C share transmission routes with HIV — mainly through blood and sexual contact.
“You have to be faithful, and of course, do use a condom when you need to have sexual relations with anybody, because the mode of transmission of Hepatitis B and C is very closely related and linked to other blood-borne diseases, such as HIV,” he noted.
He further explained that Hepatitis C is curable, while Hepatitis B can be managed with medication that slows the progression of the disease.
“For Hepatitis B, there is no cure yet, but medications are available to moderate how quickly it develops into a chronic infection, once a proper diagnosis is made,” he said.

‘Nigerians Still Exposed to Kidnappers Despite Subsidy Savings for Security’ – Atiku
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the Federal Government over the continued exposure of Nigerians to kidnappers, questioning the impact of savings from fuel subsidy removal on national security.
Atiku disclosed this in a statement on Monday while reacting to the abduction of 20 travellers, including prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, in Imo State.
He described the abduction as “heartbreaking,” noting that although some of the victims had been rescued, others remained in captivity.

Atiku urged the Federal Government, Imo State Government and security agencies to act with urgency to secure the release of all those still being held.
He also raised concern over more than 70 pupils and students abducted from Mussa and Lassa in Borno State who, according to him, have remained in captivity for months.
“These children must not be forgotten. Their families deserve clear updates, and the public deserves answers,” he said.
The former vice president questioned the government’s handling of insecurity, recalling President Bola Tinubu’s promise that savings from the removal of fuel subsidy would help fund security.
“Yet Nigerians remain exposed to kidnappers on our roads, in our communities and around our schools,” Atiku said.
He said young Nigerians were facing danger at different stages of their lives, from secondary school to university and now while travelling to NYSC camps.
“Young people face danger in secondary school, struggle with unaffordable fees at university, and are now targets on their journeys to NYSC camps. This is a generation being failed at every stage,” he said.
Atiku also criticised the award of what he described as huge pipeline security contracts to politically connected companies, while ordinary Nigerians continue to face criminals.
“The first duty of government is to protect lives,” he stated.
He called for the immediate and safe rescue of every abducted young person and the return of those still unaccounted for.
Atiku also reaffirmed his commitment to building a safer and more affordable Nigeria where young people can create, build and prosper.
“My promise to build a safer and more affordable Nigeria, where young people can create, build and prosper, remains unshakable,” he said.
