Finnish Gov’t Reveals Ongoing Legal Actions Against Pro-Biafran Leader, Simon Ekpa

Published

on

The Finnish Government has announced actions against pro-Biafran agitator Simon Ekpa concerning his secessionist activities with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Nigeria’s South-East region.

Elina Valtonen, Finland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, revealed this during a press conference in Abuja, Nigeria, on Tuesday, where she was joined by her Nordic counterparts.

Valtonen stated that the case against Ekpa, reported to Finland by the Nigerian government, is currently before Finnish courts.

Ekpa, who self-identifies as the Biafran Prime Minister, has advocated for sit-at-home directives in the South-East, despite IPOB’s mainstream leadership suspending the practice.

In February 2023, shortly before Nigeria’s presidential and national assembly elections, Ekpa was arrested in Finland for threatening that the elections would not take place in the South-East.

The arrest occurred at his residence in Lahti, as reported by the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.

The separatist Simon Ekpa repeatedly declared that there would be no elections in Nigeria’s South-East and insisted on a sit-at-home every Monday to protest the detention of Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu.

IPOB, however, distanced itself from Ekpa, who was scheduled for an interview before his arrest.

Following his release, Ekpa has remained active on social media, continuing to promote his pro-Biafran messages.

Elina Valtonen, Finland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, was part of a Nordic delegation, including ministers from Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Denmark, who visited Nigeria to strengthen trade ties.

The delegation emphasized the importance of combating violent extremism in West Africa and achieving sustainable development goals.

The Nordic ministers are now continuing their visit in Ghana.
