Fresh Trouble As Dangote Refinery Stops Fuel Sales In Naira

Published

on

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has halted the sale of petrol in naira, a decision that has unsettled oil marketers and raised concerns about another possible increase in fuel prices.

In an email to customers sent at 6:42 p.m. on Friday, the refinery announced that naira-based sales would be discontinued from Sunday, September 28, 2025.

According to the notice, the suspension became necessary after the refinery exceeded its crude-for-naira allocation.

The statement, issued by the Group Commercial Operations of Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals and titled “Suspension of DPRP PMS Naira Sales – Effective 28th September 2025”, read:

“We write to inform you that Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has been selling petroleum products in excess of our Naira-Crude allocations and, consequently, we are unable to sustain PMS sales in Naira going forward.

“Kindly note that this suspension of Naira sales for PMS will be effective from Sunday, 28th of September, 2025. We will provide further updates regarding the resumption of supply once the situation has been resolved.

“All customers with PMS transactions in Naira who would like a refund of their current payments should formally request the processing of their refund.”

The announcement comes at a time of growing disputes at the refinery. Labour groups have accused management of terminating the employment of more than 800 Nigerian staff.

On Friday, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) reacted sharply, describing the alleged sack as “an unjust and insensitive corporate decision,” and threatening nationwide solidarity actions if the issue persists.

The refinery, however, denied any mass retrenchment, insisting that only a small number of workers were dismissed on grounds of sabotage.

This is the second time in 2025 that Dangote has suspended naira transactions. Earlier in March, the refinery temporarily stopped sales of refined petroleum products in local currency due to limited crude-for-naira supplies.

That decision led to widespread debate over dollar-based fuel sales and pushed the pump price of petrol close to ₦1,000 per litre.
