Global Alarm: Amnesty Raises Red Flag Over 2026 World Cup Safety

Published

on

A fresh wave of concern has emerged ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as Amnesty International warns that the global football event could pose serious safety and human rights risks.

In a report released on Monday, Amnesty cautioned that the tournament—set to be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico—may become a “stage for repression” if urgent measures are not taken.

The human rights group called on FIFA and the host nations to ensure the protection of fans, players, journalists, and local communities throughout the competition.

Although FIFA has pledged an inclusive and safe tournament environment, Amnesty said the situation on the ground, particularly in the United States, tells a different story.

The organisation described current conditions as troubling, citing strict immigration enforcement, mass deportations, and security operations that could impact visitors.

Concerns have also been raised over the role of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which is expected to be part of the tournament’s security framework.

Amnesty warned that such measures could expose fans—especially those from certain countries or minority groups—to risks.

The report further highlighted that some supporters may face travel restrictions, while LGBTQ+ groups have already expressed hesitation about attending matches in the U.S. due to safety fears.

Amnesty stressed that planning documents from host cities have not clearly outlined how fans and residents would be protected from enforcement actions during the tournament.

“This World Cup is far from low-risk,” the organisation stated, urging swift action to align the event with global human rights standards.

Reacting, FIFA maintained that the expanded 48-team tournament—the largest in history—will go ahead as planned, with assurances that safety and inclusivity remain top priorities.

Amnesty’s economic and social justice lead, Steve Cockburn, emphasized that the success of the tournament should not come at the expense of human rights.

He said football belongs to the people and insisted that fans, workers, and communities must not “pay the price” while billions are generated from the event.

The 2026 World Cup is scheduled to kick off on June 11 in Mexico City, with the final set for July 19 in New Jersey.
