IMF Has Exposed the Truth About Nigeria’s Economy – Atiku

Published

on

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has said the latest assessment by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has exposed the real state of Nigeria’s economy, insisting that the report reflects the daily struggles of citizens across the country.

Reacting to the IMF’s recent outlook on Nigeria, Atiku stated that the economic challenges being experienced by Nigerians are not exaggerated, but instead validated by global financial institutions.

According to him, the IMF’s findings confirm what many Nigerians have long complained about—rising inflation, declining purchasing power, and worsening living conditions.

He criticised the current economic direction, describing it as one that has increased hardship rather than relief for ordinary citizens.

Atiku argued that government statistics often paint a different picture from the reality on the ground, where many households are struggling to afford basic needs.

He further stated that food prices, transportation costs, and exchange rate instability have continued to erode incomes, making survival increasingly difficult for millions of Nigerians.

Atiku also expressed concern over unemployment levels, claiming that many young people remain without opportunities despite being educated, while small businesses continue to shut down under economic pressure.

He warned that continued borrowing without visible improvement in citizens’ welfare could worsen Nigeria’s long-term economic stability.

The IMF, in its latest report, had projected slower economic growth for Nigeria in 2026, citing global price pressures, high energy costs, and challenges in the non-oil sector. The report also highlighted inflationary risks across Sub-Saharan Africa and called for tighter monetary policies to stabilise economies.

Atiku maintained that unless urgent corrective measures are taken, the economic hardship facing Nigerians may deepen further.
