IPOB Declares Total Lockdown For May 30 To Honour Biafran Heroes
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced that the South East and parts of the South South region will come to a standstill on May 30, 2025, as the group observes its annual Biafra Heroes Memorial Day.
Describing the day as one of solemn reflection and tribute, IPOB stated that the 12-hour lockdown—from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.—is meant to honour “our heroes, heroines, and those who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for Biafra’s liberation and independence.”
In a statement signed by IPOB’s media and publicity secretary, Emma Powerful, the group said the memorial has become an annual event for Biafrans both at home and in the diaspora.

“The peak of the yearly memorial and remembrance event will occur on May 30th, 2025, known as the Biafra Heroes Memorial Day. It is a day designated by IPOB for Biafrans to commemorate and pay tribute to our heroes, heroines, and those who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for Biafra’s liberation and independence.”
He noted that commemorative lectures would be held to mark the day, with Biafrans abroad expected to organize protests and remembrance events.
“All IPOB family members in their various countries must organize and obtain permits to demonstrate against the unlawful imprisonment of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and the illegal detention of Nnamdi Kanu in Nigeria,” he said.
Back home, however, IPOB is insisting on a peaceful observance with no public demonstrations.
“Notice. No protests will take place in Biafra or anywhere in Nigeria to prevent being harmed by the lethal Nigerian Security Forces,” the group said, adding that only Biafrans in foreign countries are encouraged to take to the streets or host town hall meetings.
The group also stated it had reached out to relevant authorities in preparation for the day, including the governors of the South East and South South states.
In addition, IPOB disclosed that it has contacted the West African Examination Council (WAEC) to adjust its timetable to ensure students are not caught in the lockdown.
The stay-at-home directive is comprehensive: schools, markets, churches, mosques, and community meetings are to remain closed.
“There will be no school, no community meetings, no religious services, no opening of markets and stores, and no public assemblies of any kind. Simply stay inside and enjoy television and videos with your family while contemplating the memories and the genocide inflicted upon Biafrans from 1967 to the present day,” IPOB advised.
The statement also encouraged families to share their lived experiences from the Nigerian Civil War, highlighting the group’s focus on preserving the memory of the conflict and its aftermath.
“It is a day for families to recount their experiences of the Biafran genocidal war from 1967 to 1970 and the ongoing victimisation, destruction, and marginalization of the Ndigbo within Nigeria.”
Among the many Biafran heroes the group plans to honour are late leader Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, General Phillip Efiong, Chief Dr Frank Opigo, and Commander Ikonso.
“IPOB and Ndigbo across the globe will pay tribute to all our fallen heroes and heroines, including our everlasting leader, the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu… and numerous others who significantly contributed and fought to avert the genocide and destruction of Biafrans by the Nigerian and British governments along with their allied forces.”
The group added that only those offering essential services—such as ambulance drivers, journalists, police officers, firefighters, nurses, doctors, and petroleum workers under NUPENG—will be exempted from the lockdown.
IPOB concluded by stating that the lockdown is not just about the past but also about protecting lives today.
“IPOB prioritizes the well-being of Ndigbo and has discovered methods to prevent the Nigerian State from killing our people as we continue to remember and celebrate our heroes.”

‘Nigerians Still Exposed to Kidnappers Despite Subsidy Savings for Security’ – Atiku
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the Federal Government over the continued exposure of Nigerians to kidnappers, questioning the impact of savings from fuel subsidy removal on national security.
Atiku disclosed this in a statement on Monday while reacting to the abduction of 20 travellers, including prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, in Imo State.
He described the abduction as “heartbreaking,” noting that although some of the victims had been rescued, others remained in captivity.

Atiku urged the Federal Government, Imo State Government and security agencies to act with urgency to secure the release of all those still being held.
He also raised concern over more than 70 pupils and students abducted from Mussa and Lassa in Borno State who, according to him, have remained in captivity for months.
“These children must not be forgotten. Their families deserve clear updates, and the public deserves answers,” he said.
The former vice president questioned the government’s handling of insecurity, recalling President Bola Tinubu’s promise that savings from the removal of fuel subsidy would help fund security.
“Yet Nigerians remain exposed to kidnappers on our roads, in our communities and around our schools,” Atiku said.
He said young Nigerians were facing danger at different stages of their lives, from secondary school to university and now while travelling to NYSC camps.
“Young people face danger in secondary school, struggle with unaffordable fees at university, and are now targets on their journeys to NYSC camps. This is a generation being failed at every stage,” he said.
Atiku also criticised the award of what he described as huge pipeline security contracts to politically connected companies, while ordinary Nigerians continue to face criminals.
“The first duty of government is to protect lives,” he stated.
He called for the immediate and safe rescue of every abducted young person and the return of those still unaccounted for.
Atiku also reaffirmed his commitment to building a safer and more affordable Nigeria where young people can create, build and prosper.
“My promise to build a safer and more affordable Nigeria, where young people can create, build and prosper, remains unshakable,” he said.
