Italy Urges ECOWAS To Extend Niger Ultimatum
Italy has requested that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) extend the deadline for the reinstatement of Niger’s removed president.
Antonio Tajani, the Italian Foreign Minister, offered this advice in an interview released on Monday, as reported by NAN.
“The only way is the diplomatic one. I hope that the ultimatum of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which expired last night at midnight, will be extended today,” Tajani told La Stampa newspaper.
On Sunday, Niger decided to close its airspace indefinitely due to concerns about a potential military intervention by the West African regional bloc.
This threat emerged after coup leaders refused to meet the deadline for restoring President Mohammed Bazoum, who remains detained.
Previously, numerous junta supporters gathered at a stadium in the capital city of Niamey, celebrating the decision to resist external demands for stepping down by Sunday, subsequent to the July 26 seizure of power.
