JUST IN: A’Court Reinstates Apapa As National Chairman, LP

Published

on

The judiciary would continually have a say in Nigeria’s political arena with the latest assertion of judicial authority coming for the Labour Party (LP), from the Appeal Court in Owerri, Imo State.

On Thursday, the Court of Appeal, sitting in Owerri, accorded recognition to Lamido Apapa as the National Chairman of the LP, in a ruling which ousted Julius Abure, who was hitherto occupying that position.

In the same vein, the CA ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately recognise and publish the names of all the governorship candidates produced by the Apapa-led National Working Committee (NWC) for the upcoming gubernatorial elections in Imo, Bayelsa, and Kogi States.

In the same ruling, the CA dismissed the governorship candidature of Senator Athan Achonu of Imo State, and others belonging to the Abure-led LP faction.

Recall that Apapa has maintained that his suspension from the LP would not stand legal tests, consistently asserting that he remained the ‘legitimate acting chairman.’

However, this ruling, coming after the CA sitting in Benin City, Edo State had affirmed Abure as the National Chairman of the LP leaves room for much political and legal maneuvering.

National Publicity Secretary, LP, Obiora Ifoh, is already bandying this fact in the public space with a media statement.

Both factions have been a somewhat complicated and almost frivolous legal scrimmage which political watchers see as likely to damage or at least weaken the fortunes of the LP in the political arena.
