By Edozie Obasi-Eze

JUST IN: Makinde in Tambuwal Out, as Chair, PDG Govs ForumThe power play in Nigeria’s main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has seen the baton of the chairmanship of its governors’ forum change hands.

Governor, Oyo State, Seyi Makinde has replaced his Sokoto State counterpart as Chairman, PDP Governors Forum.

Facts on these emerged on Thursday, from the party’s ongoing National Executive Council Board (NEC) meeting at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Another important development at the NEC meeting is that the Governors’ Forum seems to have driven the final into the coffin of the National Chairman of the party, Sen Iyorchia Ayu with a vote of no confidence.

It was gathered that a total of 397 members of the NEC were accredited for the meeting.

Notable among those accredited were former national chairmen of the party, the immediate past Vice President of Nigeria, Namadi Sambo, the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, among others.

The last might not have been heard on the party’s national chairmanship as the 397 members of the NEC present at the meeting were said to have voted in support of Ayu’s continued stay in office as the chairman.

OSUN GUBER: Court strikes out suit challenging Adeleke’s nomination

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke has approved the construction of Osun State Hajj Camp with immediate effect.

He made the revelation on Sunday at the Nasfat Ramadan lecture, where he bemoaned that Osun was the only state in the South West without a hajj camp.

He vowed to lay the foundation for Hajj Camp before the commencement of the next holy pilgrimage exercise.

Gov Adeleke said, “I am told Osun is the only state in the South West without an hajj camp. This must no longer be the case. If the previous government did nothing, we have a duty to provide a befitting camp. Osun must not be left out.”

He directed relevant government agencies to link with the Osun State Muslim community on appropriate locations and further compliance processes.

The Governor who joined in the drumming of “bandiri” drums listed the many projects and programmes of his administration and assured the Muslim faithful that he was in office to serve the people.

“I am in office to serve the people. I am your servant. The voters are the masters. We the elected are the servants. I have that reality right. And that is why my efforts and focus are on serving the people.

“I refused to collect security votes. I said we should use it for infrastructures. Almighty Allah has blessed me and my family before getting into this office. Our focus is to deepen the good name of my family by genuinely serving the people.

“I am completing abandoned projects and I am executing new ones. I am after good names. Our government is for the people, not for self-enrichment as in the past”, the Governor noted.

The Governor accompanied by the Secretary to the State Government, Hon Teslim Igbalaye; House Speaker, Rt Hon Adewale Egbedun and members of the State Executive Council listened all through the lecture delivered by Sheikh Abdul-Razak Aduamigba from Adabiyah family, Ilorin.

The lecturer had charged the Governor to continue his good work of developing the state as was done by his late brother, affirming that “the people as at today trust and love you.

“You are serving them well and they are happy with you. Continue to deliver for the people. Allah is your strength”, Sheikh Aduamigba declared.

Edo CJ Sets Up 7-Man Panel For Shaibu Impeachment Probe

Published

on

Chief Judge Justice Daniel Okungbowa of Edo State has assembled a seven-member panel, headed by Justice S.O. Omonua (rtd), tasked with investigating the allegations outlined in the impeachment notice against Deputy Governor Mr. Philip Shaibu.

Recall that Shaibu has been at the center of a political storm with his superior, Governor Godwin Obaseki, concerning the governorship ticket of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State.

As a result, the Edo House of Assembly (EDHA) has commenced impeachment proceedings against Shaibu, led by Majority Leader Charity Aiguobarueghian, citing alleged perjury and divulgence of government secrets as the grounds for the action.

Aiguobarueghian’s impeachment notice stemmed from a petition dated March 5, 2024, signed by 21 out of the 24 members against the deputy governor.

Consequently, last Monday, the state lawmakers passed a resolution instructing Chief Judge of the State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, to establish a seven-member committee to probe the allegations of gross misconduct leveled against Shaibu.

Following this development, the state chief judge, in a press statement signed by the Chief Registrar, B.O. Osawaru, with reference number: CR/4837/Vol. II/131 dated March 22, 2024, appointed retired Justice S.A. Omonua as the chairman of the panel.

Additionally, the statement listed Prof Violet Aigbokhevbo, Prof. Boniface Onomion Edegbai, Prof. Theresa Akpoghome, Mr. Oghogho Ayodele Oviasu, Dr. Andrew Oliha, and Mr. Idris Abdukareen as members of the committee.

Fundamental Human Rights: Adeleke’s Spokesperson Drags DSS, Oyetola To Court

Four gang-killed two in Osun, destroy N8M properties

The Spokesperson to Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, Mallam Olawale Rasheed has approached the Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo for the protection and enforcement of his fundamental human rights.

The defendants in the matter are the State Security Service (SSS), Director General, SSS, the Osun State Director, SSS and Femi Oyetola, son of the former Governor of Osun State, who is now the Minister of Blue Economy.

In the suit docketed as FHC/OS/CS/89/2024, Olawale is praying the court to restrain the security operatives, either personally or through any of their agents or representatives, from inviting him, arresting him or threatening his rights to liberty, freedom of movement, freedom of expression and freedom of association in any manner on the malicious instigation of Femi Oyetola who is acting the script of some faceless and mischievous politicians, allegedly collaborating to settle political scores against him (Olawale).

In the suit registered on 22nd March, 2024, Olawale fingered Oyetola as being embittered with the loss of his father and their political gang at the last Osun Governorship election, and as the mouthpiece of the incumbent Governor of Osun State who upstaged Femi’s father, Oyetola, he is being maliciously hunted by members of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) using the younger Oyetola, in active collaboration with security agents, to trample upon his fundamental rights.

Olawale deposed to the fact that he is not in any way a threat to the internal peace and security of Nigeria or any part thereof, to warrant security agents to invite him, but the move by the collaborators is in a bid to play the cards of the opposition APC who are planning to have him illegally arrested and unlawfully detained so as to subdue him or hijack from him his fundamental rights to liberty, freedom of movement, expression and association which he is entitled to at all times since he has not committed any offense to warrant the curtailment of his fundamental rights.

He tendered documents to the court that by virtue of section 46 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria as altered, he needs not wait till his rights are trampled upon before approaching the court.

In Olawale’s opinion, Oyetola’s move is in connivance with the unsettled opposition APC who are troubled by the daily exposure of their bad governance, unpalatable and unprogressive deeds which they meted out to Osun people while the APC led by Oyetola was in power.

He alleged that his invitation by the security operatives was tainted with malice and sole goal of settling political scores with prominent aides and members of Gov Adeleke’s team.

Olawale therefore entreated the court to grant his reliefs so as not allow the defendants to collaborate at trampling upon his rights or get at him unjustifiably.
