Adamu Bulkachuwa, the senator for Bauchi North, admitted to requesting and receiving favors from the judge, which harmed her independence while in office, in what looked to be an act of appreciation for Zainab Adamu Bulkachuwa, a former President of the Federal Court of Appeal.

After being admitted to the law in 1976, Bulkachuwa was named an appeals court justice in 1998.

She had held the position of judge in the Bauchi State High Court before being appointed to the appellate court.

In 2007, she presided over the Sokoto State governorship election petition, and Timipre Sylva’s petition challenging Seriake Dickson’s eligibility as the Bayelsa State People’s Democratic Party (PDP)’s governorship flag-bearer.

On April 17, 2014, former President Goodluck Jonathan appointed Bulkachuwa as the Federal Court of Appeal’s first female president. She held that position until March 6, 2020, when she retired from active service after turning 70.

Before her retirement, the former Appeal Court president appointed herself chair of the tribunal hearing petitions for the 2019 presidential election between Atiku Abubakar and former President Muhammadu Buhari. This was until she recused herself on May 22, 2019.

She stated that she recused herself for personal reasons. Her recusal, however, was triggered by pushback from the PDP after her husband was elected senator of the Bauchi North Senatorial District under the APC, the same party that made her son, Aliyu Haida Abubakar, a governorship candidate in Gombe State.

Bulkachuwa was born to Alhaji Abubakar El-Nafaty and Hajiya Aishatu Dudu El-Nafaty, natives of Nafada Local Government Area of Gombe State, on March 6, 1950.

She attended Tudun Wada Primary School and Senior Primary School in Kaduna, Kaduna State, between 1957 and 1963. Later, she enrolled in Queen Elizabeth School in Ilorin, Kwara State, where she gained her West African School Certificate (WASCCE) in 1968.

Between 1971 and 1972, the justice attended Abdullahi Bayero College Kano for her GCE ‘A’ Levels, and in 1975, she received her LL.B. (Hons) from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State, after which she attended the Nigerian Law School in Bwari, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, between 1975 and 1976.

Showunmi Urges South-East to Judge Tinubu by Projects, Not Propaganda

Published

on

Otunba Segun Showunmi, a member of the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) for 2027, has urged the South-East to assess President Bola Tinubu’s administration based on verifiable projects and measurable results rather than political propaganda.

Showunmi made the call in a statement posted on X on Saturday, urging Nigerians to evaluate the government’s performance based on infrastructure delivery, funds committed to projects and their impact on communities.

He said federal infrastructure initiatives targeting the South-East under Tinubu’s administration deserved serious scrutiny and factual assessment, adding that unfulfilled promises should continue to be pursued until the expected results were delivered.

“Our message is clear: We will not trade facts for propaganda, nor accountability for political loyalty!” he said.

The political figure challenged critics of the administration to provide evidence to support their claims, while urging those defending the government to present the projects and demonstrate their impact.

He also called on government officials to publish relevant figures, disclose project timelines and provide measurable results, insisting that no public official should be exempt from scrutiny.

According to Showunmi, the South-East deserves infrastructure that supports economic growth, including roads that connect markets, investments that create jobs and policies that expand economic opportunities.

He maintained that political representation must translate into tangible benefits for citizens, stressing that public office should deliver value to the people.

As part of his call to action, Showunmi urged Nigerians to scrutinise government records, challenge misinformation with evidence and demand the completion of outstanding projects.

He further called for public commitments to be matched by measurable delivery, arguing that leadership should be assessed by facts and results rather than political rhetoric.

Ending his statement with the slogan, “Asiwaju is a goal,” Showunmi called for accountability and greater inclusion of the South-East in Nigeria’s development.

Showunmi is associated with The Alternative and is a member of the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 elections.
