Ned Nwoko Proposes One year Jail Term for CEOs that fail to pay Malaria Eradication Tax
Former Member of House of Representatives, Prince Ned Nwoko has proposed legislation that will attract a one-year Jail term for any Chief Executive Officer (CEO) who failed to pay Malaria Eradication Intervention Tax.
Nwoko who made this known while addressing the Senate’s correspondent of National Assembly on the proposed bill explained that the bill is aimed at eradicating Malaria in Nigeria adding that any CEO who declined to comply with the payment of the tax is guilty of offence according to the proposed legislation.
According to Nwoko, the tax will be paid to Federal Inland Revenue by Corporate organizations.
Nwoko in the bill said, ” The tax at the rate of 2 per cent shall be charged on the assessable profit of a company registered in Nigeria.”

On the penalty for the offender, the promoter of the bill said, ” where an offence under this bill is committed by a body corporate or firm or other association or individuals
“Every director, manager, secretary or another similar officer of the body corporate.
“Every partner or officer of the firm.
“Every person who was purporting to act in that capacity is severally guilty of that offence and liable to be prosecuted had himself committed the offence, unless he proves that the act or omission constituting the offence took place without his knowledge, consent or Connivance.
“Except otherwise provided in this bill, a person guilty of an offence under this bill shall, on conviction, be liable.
“For a first offence, to imprisonment for a term of 6 months or to a fine of up to N1 million or both, and
“For the second and subsequent offence to imprisonment for a term of 12 months or to a fine up to N2 million.”
Retired police officers under the contributory pension scheme have taken to the streets of Abuja to protest several months of unpaid pensions.
Coming from various state chapters, they voiced their frustration over the hardships they face due to PENCOM’s failure to pay their entitlements.
The retirees are calling on the Federal Government to exempt them from the contributory pension scheme.
In a video shared on social media platform X on Tuesday, the retirees were seen holding placards and chanting, “All we are saying, give us our right.”

Asma al-Assad, the wife of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who bravely battled breast cancer in 2019, has been struck with another health challenge.
The president’s office revealed in a statement on Tuesday that she has been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.
The statement said, “First Lady Asma al-Assad has been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia.”

The Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara, has submitted a list of Commissioner nominees to the Rivers State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation.
The nominees are scheduled to undergo the screening process today, overseen by Assembly members loyal to the Governor.

The screening is set to take place on Tuesday, 21 May 2024, at 10:00 a.m. in the Hallowed Chamber of the Rivers State House of Assembly, located in the Auditorium, Admin. Block, Rivers State Government House, Port Harcourt.
Nominees are required to bring twelve sets of their Curriculum Vitae (CV), along with the originals and photocopies of their credentials.
This process is a crucial step in the formation of the new executive council, which is expected to drive the administration’s agenda for development in Rivers State.
The Assembly’s prompt attention to the Governor’s nominees indicates a collaborative effort towards achieving the state’s developmental goals.
