New Head Takes Over FMC Emergency Unit After Neglect Scandal

Published

In response to a public outcry sparked by a viral social media video, the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, has named Dr. Timothy Samaila, a consultant neurosurgeon, as the new head of its Accident and Emergency Unit.

The appointment was announced on Wednesday by the hospital’s Medical Director, Prof. Saad Ahmed, who revealed that the move followed the outcome of an internal investigation into the June 6 incident, where accident victims were allegedly left without urgent medical attention.

The video, which drew widespread criticism online, showed injured individuals lying unattended outside the hospital premises.

Reports suggested that staff declined to assist the victims, allegedly claiming there were no medical consumables and that bringing patients into the emergency unit was not part of their duty.

Reacting to the backlash, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako, ordered a full-scale probe.

In a statement titled “Findings of the Investigative Panel on Staff Response to Accident Victims at the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja Following a Viral Video Seen on Social Media”, Prof. Ahmed explained that an independent panel had been tasked with reviewing the case.

“The panel thoroughly examined the incident, and appropriate measures have been taken based on its findings,” he said.

According to him, the decision to appoint Dr. Samaila is one of several reforms aimed at strengthening trauma care delivery, improving emergency response, and boosting staff preparedness at the hospital.

He also clarified misconceptions surrounding the incident, stating that the victims shown in the video were eventually treated and discharged in good condition on the same day.

“The panel discovered that contrary to public belief, there was no shortage of medical supplies at the time,” Ahmed added.

To ensure accountability, the medical director confirmed that disciplinary action has been initiated against some members of staff who were present during the incident.

“For transparency and professional accountability, some staff members on duty during the incident have been referred to the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee, in line with Public Service Rules,” he stated.

Looking ahead, Ahmed also announced new collaborations with both the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and the Medical Association of Nigerians Across Great Britain (MANSAG).

These partnerships, he said, are intended to promote global best practices in emergency medicine at FMC Abuja.

He encouraged members of the public to report issues through the hospital’s official feedback channels, which are prominently displayed across all service points.

“Using these platforms ensures prompt attention, enhances patient satisfaction, and helps avoid incidents that may escalate into harassment of healthcare workers,” he urged.

Prof. Ahmed concluded by reaffirming the hospital’s commitment to maintaining quality healthcare and addressing public concerns with transparency and diligence.

Tinubu Gov’t Does Not Engage, Everybody Is Its Enemy — Ajaero

Fuel Subsidy: NLC Sets February Date for Nationwide Unrest

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, has accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of failing to meaningfully engage with organised labour, alleging that the government has remained aloof despite repeated attempts to open dialogue.

Ajaero made the remarks during an appearance on the Mic On Podcast, where he spoke about the relationship between the labour movement and the Federal Government over the past few years.

According to the NLC president, the government has not been engaging with labour and only responds when workers and other groups take steps to force its attention.

“For the past two, three years, you know, it’s not a government that is engaging. This government doesn’t engage,” Ajaero said.
He described the administration as “aloof”, stressing that meaningful engagement had been lacking between the government and organised labour.

Ajaero recalled that the NLC had, by December 17, 2025, announced plans to take its grievances to the streets after months of attempts to communicate with the President.

He said the labour movement had written to President Tinubu from June through December but received no response.

“Well, by December 17th, 2025, we pulled out that we are going to the streets. After writing a letter from May, sorry June, to December to Mr. President and there was no response,” he said.

According to him, the planned action eventually led to the intervention of some state governors, who facilitated an interface between labour and the government.

He said the intervention became necessary after other channels of communication, including the office of the Minister of Labour, had failed.

“Because the whole channel—whether through the Minister of Labour or any other office—failed, collapsed. So some governors met with us, and since that time we have talked once or twice,” Ajaero said.

However, the NLC president suggested that the situation had not significantly improved, alleging that the issues raised by labour since December had largely been left unresolved.

“And those issues… December last year to now, they’re just doing their business. Everybody is their enemy,” he added.
