Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade’s bid of returning to the Senate has suffered a set-back.

The incumbent, Senator Jarigbe Agom-Jarigbe of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) defeated the governor.

From the results unveiled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Agom-Jarigbe scored 76,145 votes, while Ayade polled 56,595.

INEC’s Returning Officer, Dr Emmanuel Emanghe, said, “By the powers conferred on me as the Returning Officer of the Northern Senatorial District, I hereby announce Jarigbe Agom-Jarigbe of the Peoples Democratic Party elected for the Northern Senatorial District.”

Recall that Ayade had risen to power as a member of the PDP. He was elected into the Senate in 2011 as a candidate of the party in 2011 and as Governor in 2015. He was also re-elected governor as a PDP member.

The governor, however, defected to the All Progressives Congress in 2021. Agom-Jarigbe, however, chose to remain the PDP.

He said no nation exists without challenges, noting that while some countries had failed to survive difficult periods, Nigeria had continued to overcome its own storms and turbulence.

According to him, Nigeria has a history of overcoming obstacles and prevailing against the odds.

Sani acknowledged that the country may not have met the expectations of those who wished it well or believed in it, but said Nigeria had also continued to disappoint pessimistic predictions about its future.

He added that the country had also defied the expectations of what he described as its foes and “prophets of doom.”

“Nigeria; A resilient nation with nine lives,” Sani wrote as he congratulated the country on its 66th Independence Anniversary.

He then criticised what he described as the country’s political class, saying the situation was different for ordinary Nigerians facing economic difficulties.

“It is only well with the glutinous political class,” he added.

Rufai concluded his post with a direct appeal to the President.

“Nigerians are suffering, President Tinubu heal Nigeria,” he wrote.

His comments came after Tinubu, in his Independence Day address, defended his administration’s economic reforms and outlined measures aimed at moving Nigeria from what he described as an era of reform into an era of prosperity.

Omokri disclosed this in a post on X on Thursday, October 1, 2026, following Tinubu’s national broadcast to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

According to Omokri, Nigerians saw a “healthy, youthful-looking, lucid, focused President Bola Tinubu” who articulated a clear message during his address.

He said listening to the President gave Nigerians the impression that the country’s “ship of state is in sound hands.”

Omokri said Tinubu also reported on the achievements of his administration, particularly in the economy.

He listed infrastructure, the non-oil sector, Foreign Direct Investment, trade surpluses and higher foreign reserves among the areas he said Nigerians had seen gains under the administration.

He further highlighted Tinubu’s statement that his administration had ensured uninterrupted payment of salaries and pensions at the federal, state and local government levels.

However, Omokri said the President’s vision goes beyond managing poverty.

“His vision is, however, to defeat poverty, not manage it,” he wrote.

Omokri said he was particularly encouraged by the President’s broadcast, adding that it made him proud of Nigeria at 66.

“After watching this broadcast, I am proud of Nigeria at 66 years,” he stated.

He congratulated Nigerians on the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary and prayed for God’s blessings upon the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Happy 66th Independence Anniversary, and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Omokri added.
