#Nigeria Decides: 10,000 Security Personnel Deployed In Plateau

In the aftermath of the off season gubernatorial elections, a fiery activist and legal practitioner, Inihebe Effiong has labelled Nigeria a jungle.

Effiong, who described himself as a public interest, human rights lawyer and enemy of oppressors, took to microblogging site, X to vent his disappointment with law enforcement agents.

He called out law enforcement agencies in what many believe to his reaction to the poor conduct of the off season elections, in Bayesla, Imo and Kogi States, among others.

Effiong, who declared on his bio, “I am committed to ending corruption and injustice,” named the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for crying out and turning blind eyes to boastings of their operatives to do evil, respectively.

In his post, Effiong wondered why an officer of the law should bear a scary nickname like “Kill and Bury”, while the law looked the other way.

Wondering how many would have become his victims, Effiong pointed out that “appellation of a hit man or executor” ought not be heard among a law enforcement agency, “that profiles young Nigerians for their hairstyles”.

The legal practitioner, lamented that true to his name, “Kill and Bury” was on duty in Imo State on Saturday during the gubernatorial elections, where, “A civil defense officer accused him of participating in disarming him and sabotaging the electoral process.”

He wrote, “A police officer bears “KILL AND BURY” as a nickname and there is no outrage in the country.

“How many people has he killed and buried so far?

“Why should a law enforcement agent bear the appellation of a hit man or executor?

“The same institution that profiles young Nigerians for their hairstyles has an officer that bears such a barbaric nickname in Imo State.

“A civil defense officer accused him of participating in disarming him and sabotaging the electoral process.

“This is a jungle!”

According to local police spokesman Henry J. Manurung, firefighters battled the inferno for more than three hours before eventually bringing it under control.

“During the inspection, officers found 11 victims who had died with burn injuries,” Manurung said in a statement.

He said five of the victims were adults, while the other six were children aged between two and nine years.

The fire destroyed at least 40 kiosks and houses despite the deployment of fire trucks and water cannons by emergency responders.

Manurung said the tightly packed arrangement of the houses and market stalls contributed to the rapid spread of the flames and made firefighting operations more difficult.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the deadly fire.

The incident adds to a series of deadly fires recorded in Indonesia in recent years.

In December, 22 people were killed when fire swept through a seven-storey office building in Central Jakarta. Police said an exploding drone battery on the ground floor was the likely cause.

In 2023, an explosion at a nickel-processing plant in eastern Indonesia also claimed at least 12 lives.

The latest tragedy has left the Paniai community mourning as authorities continue efforts to establish what triggered the devastating blaze.
