Police Shot The Nation Correspondent, Lady In Osogbo

Following an attack on protesters in Osogbo, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Osun State Council, on Wednesday demanded that the state Commissioner of Police, Wale Olokode, be redeployed.

Armed officers from the Dugbe Police Division attacked Olaiya Junction in Osogbo, the state capital, on Tuesday, firing bullets and tear gas canisters at journalists and youths protesting the extrajudicial killing of one Abiola Afolabi in Osogbo by the police in April.

Toba Adedeji, a journalist for The Nation Newspaper, and a student whose identity has not yet been revealed were shot during the attack.

On a radio show broadcast on Rave FM in Osogbo, the council chairman, Wasiu Ajadosu, ordered the Inspector-General of Police, Baba Alkali, to redeploy Olokode within seven days.

Describing police handling of the situation as unfortunate, Ajadosu said, “We are going to pursue this to a logical conclusion.

“This gross indiscipline is a result of leadership problem. The CSOs have been shouting and demanding the redeployment of the Commissioner of Police.

“We have given the police seven days to redeploy CP Olawale Olokode and we shall continue to make noise until our demands are met.”

In the same vein, Ayo Ologun, a representative for the civil society group The Osun Masterminds, denounced the police response to the protest.

He stated, “Shooting unarmed protestors is beyond the rule of engagement.”

Meanwhile, the Osun Police Command has said that an investigation into the attack has begun.

The CP had visited the wounded journalist, according to a statement issued by the command spokeswoman, Yemisi Opalola.
