POS Operator Attempts Suicide In Court Over Debt

Published

on

A man identified as Umar Usman, who works as a POS operator in Yola, the capital of Adamawa State, consumed a locally made insecticide on Monday in an apparent suicide attempt.

The motive behind his action was reportedly a debt of N1.7 million.

Umar, a resident of Yola South LGA, ingested the substance known as Otapiapia while being arraigned at the Upper Area Court I in Yola. His friend, Mustapha Baraya, had filed a criminal complaint against him regarding the owed money.

According to the history of the case, Baraya had entrusted Umar with N1.9 million for the purpose of operating a POS business.

However, Umar allegedly misused the funds and only refunded N150,000. Despite a court judgment ordering him to repay the remaining balance of N1.76 million within one month, Umar and his father continuously deceived the complainant.

Umar and his father had initially claimed to have a rice farm that was about to be harvested, promising to use the proceeds to repay the debt.

However, they secretly harvested the crop without fulfilling their financial obligation.

In response to their non-compliance, the court ruled that Umar’s house, which was given to him by his father, be sold off.

Displeased with the court’s decision, Umar brought a bottle of Otapiapia to the court session on Monday.

Once inside the judge’s chamber, he consumed the substance, causing him to immediately fall unconscious and vomit. He was promptly rushed to the hospital.

As of now, the police have not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
