Protests Ignite As MAPOLY Students Oppose Tuition Fee Hike
On Monday, students from Moshood Abiola Polytechnic in Abeokuta, Ogun State, staged a street protest at the school gate.
The demonstration, which began at 7 am, addressed concerns such as the recent increase in acceptance fees for new students, delays in result releases, staff shortages, and other grievances.
Placards with messages like #No To Increment of Tuition Fee, #Rector Must Go, and #Release our Result ASAP were prominently displayed during the protest.
According to Babatunde Adelola, the Students Union Governor, the institution’s management justified the acceptance fee hike for freshmen, citing insufficient subsidies from the state government which led to the fee increased from N35,000 to N50,500.
Adelola voiced worry about prolonged result delays, with some semester results taking up to a year to be released, adversely affecting students’ academic performance.
Adelola said “We have many reasons to protest. Recently, the school said they are not getting funding from the state government and they need to generate funds internally, which is why they increased the acceptance fee from N35,000 to N50,500.
“Apart from the fee hike, the delay in releasing our results is affecting students. For instance, those who graduated last session are yet to be mobilised for service. I am in HND 2 second semester, and I am yet to see the result of the exams I did in HND 1 second semester.
“This is affecting students because they do not know their academic standing and how well to prepare for the next exams.”
Adelola stated that attempts by the student body to engage in dialogue with the polytechnic’s Rector, Adeoye Odedeji, were unsuccessful as he was unavailable. He demanded an immediate reversal of the fee hike and the urgent release of outstanding results.
He added “We requested to meet the Rector through the DSA, but we were told that he is not available. They gave us another appointment again, which they did not honour. Last Monday, when the non-academic staff decided to protest, they asked us to meet again, but it also failed.
“We are demanding immediate reversal of the acceptance fee back to the status quo and urgent release of outstanding results.”
Yemi Ajibola, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, stated that the school administration found it challenging to address the students’ concerns because official communication of their grievances had not been received.
He said “The management is not aware of their grievances because they did not inform us of any reason why they are protesting. The management needs to be informed of what their grievances are for it to be able to sit and deliberate on them. If they channel their grievances appropriately, it will be attended to.”

Borgu: ‘We Must Never Normalise the Killing of Nigerians’ — Peter Obi
Peter Obi has condemned the reported killing of some Nigerians abducted in Borgu, Niger State, saying the country must never normalise the killing of its citizens.
Obi made this known in a statement released via X on Wednesday, where he described the reports emerging from Borgu as increasingly difficult to comprehend and deeply painful.
He recalled that on August 27, he had expressed his anguish over the reported abduction of about 600 Nigerians, including women, children and elderly people, alongside the killing of others.

According to him, his anguish has deepened following continuing reports of the gruesome killing of some of those abducted, while many others remain unaccounted for.
Obi also referred to another disturbing incident in which a bandit group reportedly beheaded a Nigerian and sent his severed head to a community leader over a ₦50 million levy.
“If the reported killing was intended to increase pressure on the community and extract more money for those still being held, then we must recognise the terrible reality before us: human life is being deliberately turned into a bargaining instrument,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor said one person being killed to terrorise an entire community while others are kept alive as hostages for more ransom amounts to the systematic devaluation of human life.
“These are not statistics. They are Nigerians. They are mothers, fathers, children, brothers, sisters and elderly people,” Obi said.
He questioned how long the country would continue to accept the kidnapping of hundreds of citizens, killings, criminal levies, displacement and ransom payments as unavoidable features of Nigerian life.
Obi said insecurity also affects families, farms, businesses, education and public confidence in government.
He called for intelligence-led operations, stronger community security, rapid response, better coordination and equipment for security forces, effective border protection and sustained action against criminal networks.
“The primary responsibility of government is the security and welfare of its citizens,” he said.
“While politicians prepare for elections, Nigerians are asking for something more fundamental: the right to live.”
Obi urged the government to match prayers with action, insisting that no criminal group should determine who lives or dies anywhere in Nigeria.
“Every Nigerian life matters. Every victim deserves justice. Every community deserves protection. Nigeria must restore security, justice, and the dignity of human life,” he added
