Senate Set Date For Public Hearing, Passage of ₦58.47trn 2026 Budget
The Nigerian Senate has set March 17, 2026, as the tentative date for the final consideration and passage of President Bola Tinubu’s ₦58.47 trillion 2026 Appropriation Bill.
The decision was reached on Friday during a special session of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, where lawmakers approved a comprehensive timetable for budget scrutiny, public input, and final legislative action.

This move comes just four days after the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, pledged that scrutiny of the 2026 budget proposal would dominate plenary proceedings when the National Assembly resumes, alongside proposed amendments to Nigeria’s electoral laws.
Under the approved schedule, the Senate’s standing committees will review budget estimates from February 2 to 13, 2026.
A public hearing on the proposal is scheduled for Monday, February 9, as part of efforts to involve broader stakeholder participation in the appropriation process.
Chairman of the Committee on Appropriations, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Ogun West), stated that the public hearing would include a PowerPoint presentation by University of Lagos economics professor, Wasiu Adeoye, providing technical insights to guide lawmakers during deliberations.
A key part of the Senate’s oversight plan is an interactive session set for March 5, 2026, during which senior members of the federal government’s economic team, including Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Wale Edun, and Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, are expected to appear before the committee.
Adeola added that reports from budget defence sessions conducted by the standing committees would be submitted between February 16 and 23, ahead of the Appropriations Committee’s final report to the Senate.
While the Senate leadership had initially proposed March 12, 2026, for the budget’s passage, an additional week was added to allow for meticulous examination of the estimates.
To facilitate this, hard copies of the 2026 budget have already been printed and distributed to chairmen and members of the standing committees.
The timetable was formally adopted following a motion moved by Senator Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central) and seconded by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia North).
