Soldiers fire live bullets in Ihiala

Delays, switch of ad-hoc staff mar supplementary poll

By Edozie Obasi-Eze

The inconclusive Anambra State governorship election billed to be made up for with supplementary election on Tuesday might have suffered another setback.

The Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) switch of ad-hoc staff, security challenges, which saw soldiers shoot someone and voter-apathy are some of the issues that might affect the supplementary election.

It was gathered that soldiers on patrol opened fire on commuters a short distance from the LGA headquarters, with an individual feared dead.

Eyewitnesses said that soldiers took the man they shot away with them, while the army themselves attempted to cover the evidence by intimidating the public to frustrate the scene from being captured on camera.

What could not be concealed is that sporadic shootings by heavily armed soldiers dispersed voters exercising their franchise at different polling units.

Several voters were scampering to safety from their polling units, with soldiers on patrol shooting sporadically in the air on Tuesday afternoon.

The palpable fear and high insecurity might have combined to compel some of the ad-hoc officials deployed for the supplementary election to absent themselves from their polling units.

The Electoral Officer told the media that there were areas where electoral personnel refused to go to for security reasons.

The officer, who preferred anonymity, identified the area as Lilu, Isseke, Orsumoghu, Ubuluisiuzo, Mbosi and Azia.

The person said that development had escalated the situation in the area.

This situation persisted with the unavailability of election materials at various polling units as at noon.

The election which was supposed to commence at 10 am and end at 4 pm could not start as at noon, because election materials were yet to leave the local government headquarters.

However, when contacted, CP Echeng Echeng, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra said that adequate security deployment had been made to ensure that the 2021 Anambra governorship supplementary election in Ihiala Local Government Area was hitch-free.

Echeng spoke at the Uzoakwa Headquarters of Ihiala while monitoring the situation and maintained that there was no cause for alarm.

He said, “We have made our deployment, it is very robust and we are confident that we are going to conduct elections in every location that we are supposed to have elections in Ihiala today.

“We are not saying that there is no fear, there is fear everywhere as far as Anambra is concerned but we have had elections in 20 Local Government Areas, this is just one Local Government Area.

“With what we have on the ground including the Police, Army, NSCDC, DSS and others, we are going to handle the situation.”

Borgu: ‘We Must Never Normalise the Killing of Nigerians’ — Peter Obi

Published

Peter Obi has condemned the reported killing of some Nigerians abducted in Borgu, Niger State, saying the country must never normalise the killing of its citizens.

Obi made this known in a statement released via X on Wednesday, where he described the reports emerging from Borgu as increasingly difficult to comprehend and deeply painful.

He recalled that on August 27, he had expressed his anguish over the reported abduction of about 600 Nigerians, including women, children and elderly people, alongside the killing of others.

According to him, his anguish has deepened following continuing reports of the gruesome killing of some of those abducted, while many others remain unaccounted for.

Obi also referred to another disturbing incident in which a bandit group reportedly beheaded a Nigerian and sent his severed head to a community leader over a ₦50 million levy.

“If the reported killing was intended to increase pressure on the community and extract more money for those still being held, then we must recognise the terrible reality before us: human life is being deliberately turned into a bargaining instrument,” he said.

The former Anambra State governor said one person being killed to terrorise an entire community while others are kept alive as hostages for more ransom amounts to the systematic devaluation of human life.

“These are not statistics. They are Nigerians. They are mothers, fathers, children, brothers, sisters and elderly people,” Obi said.

He questioned how long the country would continue to accept the kidnapping of hundreds of citizens, killings, criminal levies, displacement and ransom payments as unavoidable features of Nigerian life.

Obi said insecurity also affects families, farms, businesses, education and public confidence in government.

He called for intelligence-led operations, stronger community security, rapid response, better coordination and equipment for security forces, effective border protection and sustained action against criminal networks.

“The primary responsibility of government is the security and welfare of its citizens,” he said.

“While politicians prepare for elections, Nigerians are asking for something more fundamental: the right to live.”

Obi urged the government to match prayers with action, insisting that no criminal group should determine who lives or dies anywhere in Nigeria.

“Every Nigerian life matters. Every victim deserves justice. Every community deserves protection. Nigeria must restore security, justice, and the dignity of human life,” he added
