The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has emphasized the importance of bridging the energy access gap to the creation of economic prosperity of Nigeria.

Group Chief Executive Officer, NNPC Ltd, Mele Kyari, made this submission in a keynote address on industry operations at the 2024 edition of Society of Petroleum Engineers Oloibiri Lecture Series and Energy Forum (SPE OLEF) in Abuja, on Thursday.

Biztellers reports that the Forum held under the theme, “Stability in the Energy Sector: Integrated Strategies for Infrastructure, Transportation and Security”.

To bridge the energy access gap in Nigeria, Kyari said NNPC Ltd was working on developing the right infrastructure to deliver oil and gas to drive prosperity for Nigerians.

“We are committed to developing gas infrastructure across the country,” Kyari stated, stressing that the company’s commitment was not just a statutory requirement of the Petroleum Industry Act, but a pledge to ensure energy security beyond fuel supply.

“We are dedicated to investing in critical infrastructure to enhance economic prosperity by supplying gas to the domestic market, targeting at least 8 billion cubic meters,” Kyari added.

He listed some of the infrastructural projects being undertaken by the NNPC Ltd to help bridge the energy access gap in Nigeria to include the Obiafu/Obrikom/Oben (OB3) and Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) pipelines, adding that they are designed to enhance the nation’s gas supply network.

On the global front, Kyari said NNPC Ltd was working on expanding gas supply to the international market primarily through the NLNG Train 7 project while efforts were also being made to kick off Train 8 as well as the various floating LNG initiatives.

Kyari called for support in leveraging Nigeria’s abundant gas resources for economic prosperity, emphasizing the need to bridge access gaps in electricity and clean cooking fuel.

He assured stakeholders and investors of the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he said was committed to the gas revolution.

Also speaking at the event, Chairperson of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Nigeria Council and Head of Asset and Investments Management (NGPIS), Engr. Salahuddeen Tahir, emphasized the critical role of energy in modern society.

“It’s a trigger for essential services such as transportation, heating, electricity generation, medical services, security, banking services, and communication,” Tahir stated.

Tahir said there was need to develop a diversified and sustainable energy transportation system as a measure for mitigating climate change and enhancing energy security.

This year’s edition of the Society of Petroleum Engineers Oloibiri Lecture Series and Energy Forum (SPE OLEF) is the 24th in the series having debuted in 1991.

Detained Journalist, Segun Olatunji Regains Freedom

Published

on

Segun Olatunji, the Editor of First News Online Newspaper, has been released by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) following a two-week period in custody.

Olatunji’s detention sparked concern after he was reportedly taken from his home in Abule-Egba, Lagos, by 15 soldiers on March 15.

His release occurred under a bridge in Asokoro, Abuja, where he was handed over to Mr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren, the General Secretary of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, and Yomi Odunuga, a Deputy Editor with THE NATION.

Speculations emerged regarding the motive behind Olatunji’s arrest, with some media reports suggesting a connection to a news story in his publication alleging unfair allocation of public contracts by an official associated with the DIA.

The journalist’s arrest, reminiscent of Gestapo tactics, has sparked widespread criticism both domestically and internationally.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has strongly condemned the incident, demanding accountability from the military regarding the whereabouts of Segun Olatunji.

In a statement, CPJ urged the Nigerian military to promptly disclose any charges against Olatunji, ensure his safety, and provide transparent information regarding the circumstances of his detention.

He said “The Nigerian military should swiftly and publicly account for the whereabouts of First News editor Segun Olatunji, who was taken by armed men identifying themselves as officers with the army, disclose any charges against him, and ensure his safety.

“On March 15, around 15 armed men in two unmarked vans arrived at Olatunji’s home in Alagbado, a community in Nigeria’s western Lagos state.

“The men, two of whom wore military-style uniforms, introduced themselves as officers of the Nigerian army and forced Olatunji to come with them without explanation. Abiodun Oluwakemi, his wife, also said that she pleaded with the men not to take her husband.”

“Three days before he was taken, armed men approached a local security guard and showed him a photo of Olatunji, asking for his whereabouts. When the guard could not provide sufficient details, the men instructed him to use his phone to call a number they provided.

“The number connected to Oluwakemi’s phone, and the guard asked her questions about admission to a local university, which made no sense.

“She was confused and bothered by the call and, after contacting him again, learned from the security guard that the armed men had followed him over the days between making him place the call and Olatunji being taken.”

“Olatunji’s arrest by armed men identifying themselves as officers with the Nigerian army is totally unacceptable. Nigerian authorities must ensure his safety and swiftly clarify the reasons for his detention.

“The seizure of journalists from their homes is behaviour reminiscent of an era in Nigerian history when the military ran the country and has no place in a modern democracy.”
