Tension Rises As Fubara Approves Construction Of Psychiatric Hospital In Wike’s LGA

Published

In a significant development for healthcare in Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has approved the construction of a modern psychiatric hospital in Obi Akpor Local Government Area, which is the LGA of his political rival, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

This move comes at a time of heightened political tension between the two leaders.

Wike, who previously governed Rivers State and has publicly criticized Fubara, has accused him of neglecting those who supported his rise to power.

During a recent event held by the Ijaw Peoples Assembly in Port Harcourt, Wike vowed to retaliate politically against Fubara, declaring, “We will teach them what is called politics.”

Responding to Wike’s remarks, Governor Fubara addressed the public at an Inter-denominational Church Thanksgiving Service held to mark Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day.

He defended his administration’s achievements, stating that his initiatives in just one year surpass those of his predecessor during their eight years in office.

“It is Fubara that signed the paper to borrow from Zenith Bank the N200 billion for the construction of the Port Harcourt Ring Road,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to the region’s development.

Fubara pointed out that his administration is not only focused on infrastructure but also on vital health services, asserting, “It is this same Fubara that is building a General Hospital, which I also included a Psychiatric Hospital because they will need it very soon.”

Nigerian Politicians Engage In Corruption – Ndume

Senator Ali Ndume has issued a grave warning about the pervasive corruption among Nigerian politicians, asserting that a significant number of officials are amassing unexplained wealth.

Speaking during an interactive session with journalists in Kano on Saturday, the senator, who represents Borno South, expressed alarm over the rapid accumulation of wealth among some politicians.

He stated, “It is only in this country that somebody had no money yesterday or last week, but the following week, he buys 10 cars, buys jets, and his family will celebrate with him.”

Ndume emphasized that corruption remains one of the most pressing challenges facing Nigeria today.

“Our major challenge in this country is corruption,” he said, calling for urgent reforms to address the issue and restore integrity within the political system.

Highlighting the urgency of the issue, Ndume criticized the lack of effective legislation to combat corruption, stating, “Up till now, we have no law that can proactively or reactively address the issue of corruption in the country.”

He pointed out the absence of an Unexplained Wealth Act and relevant executive orders, which he believes exacerbates the problem.

The senator also expressed concern about the diminishing integrity within the political system, suggesting that it is increasingly rare to find uncorrupted officials.

“If you see somebody in our system, especially in politics or government, and he is not corrupt, then he is lucky that he is God-fearing,” he noted, condemning the culture of impunity that allows corrupt officials to operate freely.

In addition to corruption, Ndume addressed the economic challenges facing Nigeria, calling attention to the urgent need for agricultural development to alleviate widespread hunger.

“There is hunger in the land, and up till now, we have not cultivated up to five percent of our land. Nigeria is blessed with massive arable land,” he stated, urging for reforms to enhance food security and economic growth.

Prof Utomi wrote, “Yesterday at the PH airport, a Shell officer escorting me was fascinated by the number of people who walked up to greet me.

“I was uplifted by their kind acknowledgment with words similar to those Americans say when they meet uniformed soldiers – ‘thank you for your service to our country’.

“But what puzzled me was how many of them asked similar questions.

“Where do you get the courage to carry on. How do you cope with what must be significant personal costs of standing up for right and truth where people believe their own repeat lies, and how do you cope with stupid idiots who lack civility.

“I was honestly not prepared for the questions but muttered stuff like what you may see as pain I count as gain for cause.

“With role models like St. Thomas Moore, the man for all seasons, it’s easier to see what comes with the territory. I learned long ago that love hurts. To love God, neighbor and country can be counted on to bring discomfort but joy in the end.

“With a small sense of contentment, the will to work harder than others and gratitude for mercies granted its not really as appalling as people fear. Service can be a fun life.”
