Tinubu Takes Asset Seizure Controversy To Chinese President, Xi Jinping
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation Summit, scheduled for September 4 to 6, 2024.
As the chair of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Tinubu will prioritize discussions on regional peace and security during the summit.

The timing of the visit is notable as Chinese firm Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment Co. Limited has recently intensified its seizure of Nigerian assets.
These assets include properties in Liverpool, a Dassault Falcon 7X in Paris, a Boeing 737, an Airbus A330, and a Bombardier 6000 in Canada.
Additionally, a French court has authorized the firm to seize three Nigerian presidential jets currently in France, following a protracted arbitration dispute with the Ogun State government.
Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu’s spokesperson, emphasized that the visit is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s economic relations with China and maximizing the summit’s potential for significant bilateral and economic advancements.
Former UN Deputy Permanent Representative Usman Sarki has called for urgent diplomatic intervention to address the asset seizure, suggesting that direct negotiations between Tinubu and Xi Jinping could help resolve the conflict and recover the seized assets.
The upcoming summit is viewed as a critical opportunity for President Tinubu to negotiate a resolution to the asset dispute while enhancing Nigeria’s global economic standing.
