Illegal miners arrested

By Edozie Obasi-Eze

Up to 12 illegal miners in Abeku Adekanmbi Village, Ijebu North Local Government Area, Ogun State have found themselves in the net of the Ogun State Community, Social Orientation and Safety Corps, (So-Safe Corps).

Illegal miners arrested

This was contained in a statement on Monday by Director, Information and Public Relations, So-Safe Corps, Moruf Yusuf.

In the statement, Commander, So-Safe Corps, Soji Ganzallo, averred that the illegal miners were caught last month while allegedly stealing mineral resources, including coal and gold from under the ground.

Some of the culprits were said to have slipped through the arms of the law enforcement agents with motorcycles and other means.

The So-Safe Corps in that statement assured that no stone would be left unturned to ensure the escapees are arrested and brought to justice.

Part of the efforts include the Commander’s order that a preliminary investigation report be forwarded to the State Headquarters of the corps for further action.

To this end, Gonzalo said, “to further ensure that other accomplices who escaped through motorcycles are brought to book.”

However, the So-Safe Corps has handed those arrested to the Nigerian Police Force for further action.

“Meanwhile, the arrested suspects had been transferred to the Nigeria Police, Ijebu-Igbo Divisional Headquarters for onward transfer to the Ogun State Police Headquarter in Eleweran for further investigation and likely prosecution,” Gonzalo added.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that Bello has since left the lodge, accompanied by the current Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Ododo. Following the incident, normalcy appears to have returned to the vicinity.

This latest attempt to apprehend Bello follows his long-standing status on the EFCC’s wanted list for allegedly laundering N80.2 billion. After months of evading capture, a statement from the Director of Yahaya Bello Media Office, Ohiare Michael, indicated that the former governor had agreed to attend an EFCC invitation after consulting with his family, legal advisors, and political allies.

However, the EFCC responded by clarifying that Bello is not in their custody and remains a wanted individual due to the serious money laundering charges against him, as reiterated by spokesman Dele Oyewale.
