UCL: Two Dead, Hundreds Arrested As PSG Fans Riot After Historic Win
The city of Paris and several other parts of France descended into chaos on Saturday night after Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) claimed their maiden UEFA Champions League title with a dominant 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in Munich.
What began as jubilant celebrations quickly spiraled into disorder, with two tragic deaths and over 550 arrests recorded nationwide.
According to France’s Interior Ministry, 491 arrests took place in the capital, Paris, where thousands of ecstatic fans had gathered on the Champs-Élysées to revel in the club’s historic win.
One of the fatalities occurred in Paris’ 15th arrondissement, just a few kilometers from the central celebrations. A man riding a scooter was struck by a car and died on the scene.

Meanwhile, in the town of Dax, located in southwestern France, a 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death during a PSG victory gathering.
Authorities confirmed the suspect is still at large and investigations are ongoing.
In Grenoble, celebrations took another grim turn when a car drove into a crowd of PSG fans, injuring four people from the same family—two of them seriously.
Police said the driver later surrendered and tested negative for alcohol and drugs. A source close to the case noted there’s no indication the act was deliberate.
Despite the disturbances, the majority of fans celebrated peacefully. Around 48,000 supporters had filled the Parc des Princes stadium to watch the match live on big screens.
However, unrest flared near the stadium and along the Champs-Élysées, where police were seen using water cannons to disperse aggressive crowds attempting to reach the Arc de Triomphe.
Officers reported repeated confrontations, including the hurling of fireworks and other projectiles.
Many of those detained were found with illegal fireworks or accused of public disorder, the police said.
As news of PSG’s emphatic win spread, political leaders joined the chorus of praise.
President Emmanuel Macron described the victory as “a day of glory for PSG” in a message on X (formerly Twitter), and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo called it a “historic” achievement.
In a show of national pride, Macron is expected to host the victorious squad today at the Élysée Palace.
Meanwhile, a celebratory parade is scheduled on the Champs-Élysées, with thousands of supporters anticipated to line the famous boulevard.
For fans like 20-year-old Clement, the win carried deep emotional weight, “It’s so good and so deserved! We have a song that talks about our struggles, and it hasn’t always been easy. But we got our faith back this year with a team without stars. They’re 11 guys who play for each other.”
Data from Médiamétrie revealed that 11.5 million viewers across France tuned in to watch the final, marking a record-breaking night not just for PSG, but also for French football.

FIFA Under Fire as US Authorities Launch Probe Into Alleged Ticket Exploitation
World football governing body FIFA is facing growing scrutiny after authorities in the United States opened an investigation into allegations of ticket pricing exploitation ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The probe, announced by officials in New York and New Jersey, will examine whether FIFA engaged in unfair pricing strategies, including alleged “impossibly high” ticket costs, misleading seat allocations, and dynamic pricing models that push prices higher as demand increases.
According to prosecutors, the investigation aims to determine whether fans were unfairly treated during the ticket sales process or misled about what they were purchasing.

New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport described the ticketing system as confusing and exploitative, saying it has turned access to World Cup matches into what she called a “gauntlet of confusion and fake scarcity.”
Her New York counterpart, Letitia James, also expressed concern over rising ticket prices and accessibility, stressing that football supporters deserve transparency and fairness in the sales process.
The controversy has intensified ahead of the tournament kickoff on June 11 across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, with the final scheduled to be held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19.
Beyond ticket prices, fans have also raised concerns about additional match-day costs, including expensive transportation and parking fees, further increasing the financial burden of attending games.
The investigation adds to mounting pressure on FIFA as global criticism grows over the commercialisation of major football tournaments and the affordability of attending matches for ordinary supporters.
Authorities in other US states have also reportedly raised concerns, suggesting the issue could be more widespread across the tournament’s hosting arrangements.
