Unexpected Finding Aids In Fighting Against Malaria
Researchers have discovered a naturally occurring bacterial strain that can assist in preventing the spread of malaria from mosquitoes to humans.
After a colony of mosquitoes in one experiment failed to develop the malaria parasite, they accidentally discovered it.
According to the experts, the bacteria may be a new weapon in the fight against one of the oldest diseases in the world, which claims 600,000 lives annually.
Trials evaluating its viability in the real world are now being conducted.
Scientists at a research facility in Spain, run by the GSK pharmaceutical company, made the discovery after noticing that a colony of mosquitoes being used for drug development had stopped carrying malaria.
“The infection rate in the mosquitoes started dwindling and so by the end of the year the mosquitoes just would not be infected with the malaria parasite,” says Dr Janneth Rodrigues, who led the programme.
The team froze the samples from their 2014 experiment and went back to them two years later to explore what had happened.
Further studies revealed that a specific strain of bacteria – TC1 – which is naturally present in the environment, had stopped the development of the malaria parasites in the gut of the mosquitoes.
“Once it colonises the mosquito, it lasts for the entire lifespan,” says Dr Rodrigues.
“And we found out that, yes, it is the bacteria which was responsible for reducing transmission in those mosquitoes.”
Recent data from Science magazine reveals that certain bacteria can slash a mosquito’s parasite load by 73%.
These bacteria secrete harmane, a molecule that thwarts early malaria parasite growth in mosquitoes’ guts. Harmane can be ingested by mosquitoes when mixed with sugar or absorbed through their skin.
This opens up the potential to treat resting surfaces in mosquito-prone areas. Trials are underway at MosquitoSphere in Burkina Faso to gauge harmane’s real-world effectiveness.
If successful, this bacterial intervention could provide a new tool to combat malaria, a disease that claims around 620,000 lives annually, primarily young children.

Why Pregnant Women Must Avoid Self-Medication
Medical experts have warned expectant mothers against self-medication during pregnancy, stressing that the practice poses serious risks to both the mother and the unborn child.
According to health professionals, no drug is completely safe for use during pregnancy, especially without proper medical supervision.
They explained that medicines commonly taken for ailments such as cough, malaria, headaches or fever may interfere with foetal development when used without a doctor’s prescription.

A family physician, Dr John Ovuoraye, noted that some medications regarded as safe before conception could become harmful once a woman becomes pregnant.
He explained that self-medication increases the risk of congenital abnormalities, some of which may not be detected until after birth.
“Pregnancy changes how drugs affect the body. That is why women should not assume that medicines they have used before are still safe once they are pregnant,” he said.
Experts also cautioned against the use of over-the-counter drugs obtained from chemists or unlicensed drug vendors, warning that some sellers lack the professional training to recommend pregnancy-safe medicines.
International research has further raised concerns about drug use during pregnancy.
A study conducted by the University of Iowa College of Public Health found a possible link between the use of certain cough medications in pregnancy and specific birth defects, highlighting the need for caution.
Dr Ovuoraye advised pregnant women to seek medical care in hospitals rather than treating themselves, even for minor illnesses.
He added that herbal medicines and alcohol should also be avoided, as their toxic effects could harm the developing baby.
Health experts stressed that birth defects linked to inappropriate drug use may include physical deformities, congenital heart conditions and abnormalities affecting vital organs.
They urged expectant mothers to attend regular antenatal clinics, report any health concerns to qualified medical personnel and follow prescribed treatments based on their stage of pregnancy.
Medical professionals continue to emphasise that avoiding self-medication and seeking proper medical advice remain key to ensuring a healthy pregnancy and safe delivery.
