Spain Makes Provision For Menstrual Leave
In an unprecedented move, Spain’s sexual and reproductive health law, which provides for the right of women to take time off work during their monthly cycles, became effective Thursday.
Biztellers gathered from international media that the Gender Equality Ministry’s bill, put forward by the left-wing government, secured parliamentary approval in February.
It had to wait for some touches and amendments before arriving at what now constitutes the new law.
Other highlights of the law include removal of barriers which make access to abortions and changing the gender of trans people easier.
After the parliamentary vote in February, Equality Minister Irene Montero spoke of a “historic day for the advancement of feminist rights.”
Biztellers reports that menstrual leave is not a common regulation. For instance, there is no such provision in Germany.
Even in Taiwan, where some legal semblance exists, women are only permitted to stay at home for three days annually, which would attract a penalty of 50 percent of pay cut.
It was gathered that in South Korea, employers were required to give their female employees one day off a month if they request. However, the law does not regulate who pays the employee’s salary.
With this development, in Spain, to take menstrual leave, female workers would have to tender a doctor’s note.
As the number of days for menstruation can fluctuate, the duration of the leave from work is in principle unlimited.
From the legal provisions, the leave duration would be dependent upon how severe the menstrual pain is and how long it lasts.
Cost implications on the menstrual leave are to be borne by the state.

A gas cylinder explosion at a filling station in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State has resulted in significant damage to six vehicles, according to a statement from the Katsina State Police Command.
The command’s spokesperson, Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Friday, November 15, 2024.
He explained that a loud explosion alerted police operatives from the Jibia Divisional Police Headquarters. Responding promptly, the Divisional Police Officer led a team to the site, supported by military personnel.

“Upon arrival, operatives found a truck loaded with gas cylinders engulfed in flames at Tamal filling station, along Kagadama-Magamar Jibia Road,” Sadiq-Aliyu stated. The joint team acted swiftly, deploying measures to protect lives and limit property damage. Their efforts successfully extinguished the fire.
The spokesperson added, “Six motor vehicles were significantly affected by the fire incident, but fortunately, no life was lost.”
State Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Abubakar-Musa, has directed a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. Updates on the findings will be provided as investigations progress.
This incident highlights the need for heightened safety measures at gas filling stations to prevent such occurrences.
