on

Nigeria’s national women’s football team, the Super Falcons, has been placed in Group B for the upcoming 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which is set to be co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup is slated to span one month, commencing on July 20th and concluding on August 20th, 2023.

This edition of the tournament marks a historic milestone as it will be jointly hosted by two countries.

Additionally, it is noteworthy that this will be the inaugural senior World Cup held across multiple confederations.

The Super Falcons which been placed in Group B for the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup will be competing against Australia, Canada, and the Republic of Ireland in their group.

It’s worth mentioning that Nigeria has faced both the Canadian and Australian women’s national teams in previous FIFA World Cups.

In 1995, they played against Canada and managed to secure a 3-3 draw also in the 2011 tournament, Nigeria emerged victorious with a 1-0 win over Canada.

In the previous FIFA World Cup in 2015, Nigeria faced Australia, resulting in a 2-0 victory in favor of the Australian team.

On a different note, the Super Falcons have not previously played against the Republic of Ireland, as this will be Ireland’s first appearance in the FIFA World Cup.

In anticipation of the World Cup, Nigeria engaged in friendly matches against prominent teams such as the USWNT (United States Women’s National Team), the Canadian women’s national team, and Japan’s Nadeshiko team.

In October, the Nigerian women’s football team, the Super Falcons, suffered a 2-0 defeat against Japan. Similarly, in September 2022, they faced the US Women’s National Team, who emerged victorious with a 4-0 win on September 6 and a 2-1 win later in the same month.

The Super Falcons have a remarkable record in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, having clinched the title 11 times.

They are considered the dominant team in Africa and have participated in every FIFA Women’s World Cup since 1991. Their most notable achievement in the FIFA senior women’s tournament is reaching the quarterfinals.

During their initial two World Cup appearances, the Super Falcons were eliminated in the group stage.

However, their breakthrough came in the 1999 edition hosted by the United States of America, where they successfully advanced to the knockout stage.

Usyk Defeats Fury To Become Undisputed Champion

Published

on

Oleksandr Usyky triumphed over Tyson Fury by split decision on Sunday, securing the title of the first undisputed heavyweight champion in 25 years, a landmark in the sport’s four-belt era.

Initially, Fury, a Briton, dominated the fight, but Usyk steadily took control. The “Gypsy King” narrowly avoided a knockout in the ninth round before ultimately facing his first career defeat.

Usyk, an undefeated Ukrainian, now stands alongside legends like Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis, and Mike Tyson as an undisputed heavyweight champion, a title last unified under the current four-belt system established in the 2000s.

This win allows the former undisputed cruiserweight champion to stake his claim as the leading heavyweight of his era.

However, with a rematch expected in October, the rivalry may yet see another dramatic development.

Usyk, 37, who briefly served as a soldier following the Russian invasion said “It is a big opportunity for me, for my family, for my country. It’s a great time, a great day.” further expressing readiness for a rematch.

Fury called it a “fantastic fight with Oleksandr.”

He said “I believe I won that fight, I believe he won a few of the rounds, but I won the majority of them. You know his country is at war, so people are siding with the country at war but make no mistake, I won that fight in my opinion and I will be back.”

Britain’s Lennox Lewis was the last man to unify the heavyweight belts—three at the time—after defeating Evander Holyfield in 1999.
