POS Operator Returns N10m Mistakenly Sent To His Account, Receives 500k Reward
In a remarkable display of integrity, Mohammed Sani Abdulrahman, a 37-year-old Point of Sale (POS) operator in Kano, found himself at the center of an extraordinary tale when a Kano-based grain dealer mistakenly transferred a whopping N10 million into his account instead of the intended N10,000.
Undeterred by the unexpected windfall, Mohammed immediately took action, reporting the bizarre transaction to the authorities upon receiving the alert for the significant sum.
His swift response set off a chain of events, with the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Usaini Gumel, mobilizing a dedicated team of investigators to trace the origin of the erroneous transfer.
After three months of diligent detective work, the mystery of the mistaken transaction was finally unraveled, leading to the identification of the Dawaunu grain market businessman responsible.
Upon retrieving his N9.9 million from the police, the relieved businessman generously rewarded Mohammed with a commendable sum of N500,000.
Commissioner Gumel lauded Mohammed for his unwavering honesty and sense of duty throughout the ordeal, highlighting his exemplary conduct as a shining example of integrity and patriotism in the community.
According to a Statement by the Kano Police Command spokesperson, Abdullah Haruna Kiyawa: “It took the Police investigation three ( months period in identifying the owner of the excess money. After getting all the proofs, CP Gumel casts encomium to both the POS Operator and the Police team from the State CID for the display of honesty, integrity, professionalism and encourages others to follow this rare exemplary track.
“It was since on 21/12/2023, that a Point of Sale (POS) Operator known as Mohammed Sani Abdulrahman, 37 years, ‘m’, of Kurnar Asabe Quarters Kano, reported himself at the Bompai Police Headquarters Kano where he stated that someone among his customers has overpaid into his POS business, the sum of Nine Million, Nine Hundred and Ninety Thousand Naira (N9,990,000:00) while he wanted to make an online transfer of Ten Thousand Naira (N10,000:00) only and mistakenly transferred the sum of ten million naira (N10,000,000:00).
“On receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, FIPMA, psc directed a team of detectives led by SP Abdulwahab Zubairu from the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to carry out discreet investigation with a view to identify the owner and return his money.
“On the 14th of March, 2024, the investigation was concluded by uncovering the identity of the rightful owner, who is a businessman at Dawanau Grain Market in Kano Metropolis.
“After a painstaking investigation and being satisfied with proofs of ownership, the money, the excess sum of Nine Million, Nine Hundred and Ninety Thousand Naira (N9,990,000) was returned to the owner’s same account.
“The owner admired the gesture of which out of joy and with pleasure gave the POS operator cash gift of Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N500,000:00). The owner also thanked the CP for his honesty, integrity, and showing good example.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, FIPMA, psc who is famously nick-named by the good people of the State as “A Fada a Cika” commended the POS operator for his honesty and good conduct and referred this kind gesture as rare enabled the owner also encourages others to emulate.” He added

A gas cylinder explosion at a filling station in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State has resulted in significant damage to six vehicles, according to a statement from the Katsina State Police Command.
The command’s spokesperson, Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Friday, November 15, 2024.
He explained that a loud explosion alerted police operatives from the Jibia Divisional Police Headquarters. Responding promptly, the Divisional Police Officer led a team to the site, supported by military personnel.

“Upon arrival, operatives found a truck loaded with gas cylinders engulfed in flames at Tamal filling station, along Kagadama-Magamar Jibia Road,” Sadiq-Aliyu stated. The joint team acted swiftly, deploying measures to protect lives and limit property damage. Their efforts successfully extinguished the fire.
The spokesperson added, “Six motor vehicles were significantly affected by the fire incident, but fortunately, no life was lost.”
State Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Abubakar-Musa, has directed a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. Updates on the findings will be provided as investigations progress.
