Thai Court Dismisses PM In High-Profile Ethics Case
On Wednesday, Thailand’s Constitutional Court dismissed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, citing dishonesty in an ethics case that added to the kingdom’s political turmoil.
In a 5-4 decision, the court found that Srettha breached regulations by appointing a cabinet minister with a criminal record.
This ruling follows the court’s recent dissolution of the Move Forward Party (MFP) and a 10-year political ban on its former leader.

Judge Punya Udchachon explained that Srettha’s actions indicated a lack of integrity and violated ethical standards.
The court determined that Srettha must have been aware of lawyer Pichit Chuenban’s 2008 conviction when making the appointment.
Srettha, who served less than a year in office, is the third prime minister from the Pheu Thai party to be removed by the Constitutional Court.
Thailand has faced two decades of ongoing political instability, marked by coups, street protests, and judicial actions, largely fueled by the clash between the military, pro-royalist factions, and progressive parties linked to Thaksin Shinawatra, the founder of Pheu Thai.
Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai will act as caretaker prime minister until a new leader is chosen by parliament.
Srettha expressed regret at being labeled dishonest but affirmed his intention to respect the court’s decision.
Srettha told reporters, “I respect the verdict. I reiterate that for the almost one year I have been in this role, I have tried with good intentions to lead the country with honesty.”
Srettha was removed from office due to his appointment of Pichit, a lawyer connected to the family of billionaire former prime minister Thaksin, who has been a longstanding adversary of Thailand’s conservative, pro-royalist, and pro-military elite.
Pichit, who was sentenced to six months in prison in 2008 for a corruption-related offense, resigned from the cabinet earlier this year in an attempt to protect Srettha. Despite this, the court proceeded with the case.
Srettha assumed power less than a year ago, leading a coalition formed by Pheu Thai after negotiating with army-linked parties.
The ruling underscores persistent divisions in Thai politics between the conservative establishment and progressive parties like Pheu Thai and its new competitor, MFP.
In just a week, the Constitutional Court has not only removed the elected prime minister but also dissolved the party that secured the most seats in last year’s election, MFP.
Phil Robertson, Deputy Asia Director at Human Rights Watch, has criticized the ruling.

A gas cylinder explosion at a filling station in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State has resulted in significant damage to six vehicles, according to a statement from the Katsina State Police Command.
The command’s spokesperson, Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Friday, November 15, 2024.
He explained that a loud explosion alerted police operatives from the Jibia Divisional Police Headquarters. Responding promptly, the Divisional Police Officer led a team to the site, supported by military personnel.

“Upon arrival, operatives found a truck loaded with gas cylinders engulfed in flames at Tamal filling station, along Kagadama-Magamar Jibia Road,” Sadiq-Aliyu stated. The joint team acted swiftly, deploying measures to protect lives and limit property damage. Their efforts successfully extinguished the fire.
The spokesperson added, “Six motor vehicles were significantly affected by the fire incident, but fortunately, no life was lost.”
State Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Abubakar-Musa, has directed a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. Updates on the findings will be provided as investigations progress.
This incident highlights the need for heightened safety measures at gas filling stations to prevent such occurrences.
