Alexi Lalas Criticises Copa America Organizers Over Shakira’s Halftime Performance

Published

on

Former American soccer player, Alexi Lalas has voiced strong criticism against the organizers of the 2024 Copa America final for the handling of Shakira’s halftime performance.

The Colombian pop star was slated to entertain fans and build excitement during the halftime break of the final match between Argentina and Colombia, held at Hard Rock Stadium in Florida.

However, on his “State of the Union” podcast, Lalas expressed disappointment, stating that Shakira was not given the necessary support to ensure a successful performance.

“I have nothing against Shakira, she seems to be a big star. The actual performance, I don’t think it was anything historic or will be remembered,” Lalas remarked.

Lalas noted several issues that marred the performance.

He pointed out the initial absence of backup dancers, which left Shakira performing solo on stage.

“It begged for backup dancers and she was solo dancing around. It just didn’t look normal. Eventually, they came out, but that was a little weird [at first],” he said.

The former soccer star was particularly critical of the lighting during Shakira’s performance. He described the lighting as unflattering and poorly executed, casting shadows on her legs that created an undesirable visual effect. “My big problem, I don’t know who does their lighting. I don’t know who the production team was, but somebody needs to get fired,” Lalas asserted. “The lighting on her legs cast these shadows which made it look like she had fish scales and even worse. No man or woman wants that when you’re performing. They did her dirty. This was a bad decision and an unnecessary type of decision.”

Lalas concluded by emphasising that the poor lighting and production choices did a disservice to Shakira, detracting from what should have been a highlight of the event. His comments have sparked discussions about the importance of proper production support for major entertainment acts at sporting events.
