ASSBIFI Halts Strike, Orders Banks To Resume Operation
The Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions has suspended its plans to strike and announced that banks will resume operations on Monday, February 20, 2023.
The decision comes after recent protests and destruction of bank facilities across the country due to naira scarcity.
The President of the association, Olusoji Oluwole, disclosed this on Sunday.
However, he also cautioned members to close their doors and gates to customers if their lives are under threat, even without further instructions
He said: “Following the recent unwarranted attacks on members of ASSBIFI, other bank workers, and the destruction of several branches across various states, we were forced to issue a stay-at-home order to our members to safeguard their lives, and properties of their various organisations.
“Based on the outcome of our discussion, we hereby release the following statements: while our members will resume at their functional branches immediately, the safety and security of their lives remain paramount to us and we continue to demand that visible and adequate security is provided in all operational areas. particularly places that are traditionally known to be volatile.” He added.
He further advised members to assess the security situation in their environments before opening for business.
Oluwole also expressed concern over the inciting and threatening statements made in response to the initial inability of banks to accept old N1000 and N500 notes, based on the instruction of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Recall that Under the aegis of the Association of Senior Staff of Banks Insurance and Financial Institutions, ASSBIFI, directed bank workers in Lagos and other states where banks have been attacked to stay off duty for safety reasons until normalcy returns.
Olusoji Oluwole, the President of ASSBIFI, had issued a circular to all its units across the country, stating “The National Secretariat has been inundated with reports of threats and attacks on lives and properties of members and bank branches, and subsequently has been on the field to monitor and confirm the reports.
“We issued warnings and appeals to the government to provide security measures for the safety of lives and properties of our members within and around the bank premises, but regrettably the attacks have continued without any form of security for the safety of our members, and the attack on Friday 17th February 2023 on one bank branch at Epe, Lagos State.
“Consequently, all members should Today immediately stay away from work in any state where bank branches are attacked. This is to continue every day until normalcy is restored.” The circular added, “note you will be availed further directives as events develop.” He added.

A gas cylinder explosion at a filling station in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State has resulted in significant damage to six vehicles, according to a statement from the Katsina State Police Command.
The command’s spokesperson, Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Friday, November 15, 2024.
He explained that a loud explosion alerted police operatives from the Jibia Divisional Police Headquarters. Responding promptly, the Divisional Police Officer led a team to the site, supported by military personnel.

“Upon arrival, operatives found a truck loaded with gas cylinders engulfed in flames at Tamal filling station, along Kagadama-Magamar Jibia Road,” Sadiq-Aliyu stated. The joint team acted swiftly, deploying measures to protect lives and limit property damage. Their efforts successfully extinguished the fire.
The spokesperson added, “Six motor vehicles were significantly affected by the fire incident, but fortunately, no life was lost.”
State Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Abubakar-Musa, has directed a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. Updates on the findings will be provided as investigations progress.
This incident highlights the need for heightened safety measures at gas filling stations to prevent such occurrences.
