CBN Directs Banks To Accept, Dispense Old Notes, Emefiele Confirmed It To Me – Soludo
The Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, has issued a statement urging the residents of the state to use the old naira notes for transactions and report any banks that refuse to accept them.
The announcement was made on his Facebook page on Monday.
Soludo also revealed that the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, confirmed to him that commercial banks are allowed to dispense and accept the old notes from customers.
He wrote, “Commercial banks have been directed by the Central Bank to dispense old currency notes and to also receive the same as deposits from customers.
“Tellers at commercial banks are to generate the codes for deposits and there is no limit to the number of times an individual or company can make deposits.
“The Governor of the CBN gave the directive at a Bankers’ Committee meeting held on Sunday, 12th March 2023. The Governor, Dr Godwin Emefiele, personally confirmed the above to me during a phone conversation on Sunday night.
“Residents of Anambra are therefore advised to freely accept and transact their businesses with the old currency notes (N200; N500; and N1,000) as well as the new notes.
“Residents should report any bank that refuses to accept deposits of the old notes. The Anambra State Government will not only report such a bank to the CBN but will also immediately shut down the defaulting branch.” he added.
The Anambra governor’s disclosure comes 10 days after the Supreme Court ruled that old 500 and 1000 notes will remain legal tenders till December 2023.
The Central Bank of Nigeria had previously stated that old naira notes were no longer considered legal tender as of Friday, February 10.
The implementation of the Naira redesign policy had caused a shortage of cash in Nigeria, leading to significant hardship for businesses, commercial services, and individuals.
This culminated in violent protests and attacks on banks throughout the country in February.
President Muhammadu Buhari thereafter said he understands the pain that Nigerians were going through to withdraw cash from the banks.
He directed the CBN to allow only the old 200 naira notes to coexist with the redesigned 200, 500 and 1000 naira notes.
Buhari said he sympathisers with Nigerians over the difficulties in accessing the new Naira notes.
He insisted that the Naira redesign was aimed at curbing inflation, and corruption, and improving transparency in cash flow to all sectors of the Nigerian economy.

A gas cylinder explosion at a filling station in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State has resulted in significant damage to six vehicles, according to a statement from the Katsina State Police Command.
The command’s spokesperson, Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Friday, November 15, 2024.
He explained that a loud explosion alerted police operatives from the Jibia Divisional Police Headquarters. Responding promptly, the Divisional Police Officer led a team to the site, supported by military personnel.

“Upon arrival, operatives found a truck loaded with gas cylinders engulfed in flames at Tamal filling station, along Kagadama-Magamar Jibia Road,” Sadiq-Aliyu stated. The joint team acted swiftly, deploying measures to protect lives and limit property damage. Their efforts successfully extinguished the fire.
The spokesperson added, “Six motor vehicles were significantly affected by the fire incident, but fortunately, no life was lost.”
State Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Abubakar-Musa, has directed a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. Updates on the findings will be provided as investigations progress.
This incident highlights the need for heightened safety measures at gas filling stations to prevent such occurrences.
