Dangote Refinery Exports First Jet Fuel Cargo To Europe

Published

Nigeria’s Dangote refinery has taken a major step onto the global stage by exporting its first jet fuel cargo to Europe, a significant achievement for the massive facility.

BP is transporting 45,000 metric tons of jet fuel from the Dangote refinery to Rotterdam aboard the Doric Breeze, according to S&P Global Commodity Insights.

This shipment marks the refinery’s first entry into the European market following a substantial 120,000 metric ton tender.

This move highlights the rapid operational growth of the Dangote refinery, which has a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day.

S&P Global Commodity Insights noted that this development could have a notable impact on global energy markets.

The jet fuel shipment, referred to as “BP cargo,” is a pivotal moment for both BP and the Dangote refinery, signaling a new phase of international trade and energy distribution.

The shipment, loaded from Lekki on May 27, highlights the refinery’s rapid production scale-up and its compliance with European jet A1 standards, potentially setting the stage for a shift in West African trade flows.

“Two sources confirmed that the Doric Breeze ship marked the inaugural BP cargo, loading 45,000 mt of supply from Lekki May 27, according to S&P Global Commodities at Sea data.

“Cepsa also secured part of the tender, with the Spanish refiner expected to deliver supply to the continent imminently, traders said.

“Neither of the companies were available for comments on purchases of jet fuel from the refinery, while a representative from Dangote previously confirmed to S&P Global Commodity Insights that the refinery has complied with European jet A1 standards since the product first started being shipped within Africa in April.

“The inaugural European shipment demonstrates the growing reach of products from the 650,000 b/d Dangote refinery as it has rapidly ramped up operations and aims to shake up established West African trade flows.

“Dangote has exported six jet fuel/kerosene cargoes starting April 8, with all material delivered to Senegal, Togo or Ghana, according to CAS data. BP is also expected to continue supplying jet fuel to the West African market with product from the refinery,” sources said.

In a strategic move to revitalize Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, the Federal Government has unveiled two key fiscal incentives aimed at attracting investment and enhancing energy security.

The announcement was made by Mr. Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy on Wednesday.

The first initiative, the Value Added Tax (VAT) Modification Order 2024, introduces critical exemptions for essential energy products and infrastructure, including Diesel, Feed Gas, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Electric Vehicles, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) infrastructure, and Clean Cooking Equipment.

These exemptions are designed to reduce living costs for Nigerians, promote energy security, and accelerate the transition to cleaner energy alternatives.

The second initiative, the Notice of Tax Incentives for Deep Offshore Oil & Gas Production, offers new tax relief options for deep offshore exploration projects.

This measure aims to position Nigeria’s deep offshore basin as a premier destination for international oil and gas investments, boosting the country’s appeal to foreign investors.

These reforms are part of a broader set of policy initiatives, known as Policy Directives 40-42, endorsed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The directives reflect the administration’s commitment to fostering sustainable development in the energy sector and enhancing Nigeria’s competitive edge in the global oil and gas market.
