Indian Oil Close to Buying Some Petronas Canadian Assets
NEW DELHI – State-controlled Indian Oil Corp. is close to acquiring a 10% stake in Malaysia’s Petroliam Nasional Bhd’s shale-gas assets and a liquefied-natural-gas project in the Canadian province of British Columbia for 1 billion Canadian dollars ($900 million), two senior Indian government officials said on Tuesday.
The proposed deal with Petronas needs Indian cabinet approval, and the matter is scheduled to be discussed by ministers on Wednesday, the officials, who declined to be identified, told The Wall Street Journal.
If the deal goes through, it would mark the entry of India’s largest fuel retailer into Canada’s energy sector. It would also give a boost to the company’s ambitions to expand in oil and gas exploration globally. It currently has investments in oil and gas blocks in Africa and the Middle East.Indian Oil is largely dependent upon imported crude oil and natural gas. India meets three-fourths of its energy needs through imports. The company has been scouting opportunities to tap into North America’s shale gas boom to reduce its dependence on imports from the Middle East and to cut costs.
India Oil and Petronas officials didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.
The shale gas assets and the proposed export-oriented LNG project are operated by Progress Energy Canada Ltd. Petronas had bought the company for around $5 billion in 2012. Later, it sold a 10% stake in the coming liquefied natural gas facility and shale gas project to Japan Petroleum Exploration Co. Ltd.
Petronas has said it plans to invest $20 billion over the next several years in British Columbia, as it wants to remake North America into a global export hub for natural gas.

FG Introduces New Incentives To Revitalize Nigeria’s Oil & Gas Industry
In a strategic move to revitalize Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, the Federal Government has unveiled two key fiscal incentives aimed at attracting investment and enhancing energy security.
The announcement was made by Mr. Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy on Wednesday.
The first initiative, the Value Added Tax (VAT) Modification Order 2024, introduces critical exemptions for essential energy products and infrastructure, including Diesel, Feed Gas, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Electric Vehicles, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) infrastructure, and Clean Cooking Equipment.

These exemptions are designed to reduce living costs for Nigerians, promote energy security, and accelerate the transition to cleaner energy alternatives.
The second initiative, the Notice of Tax Incentives for Deep Offshore Oil & Gas Production, offers new tax relief options for deep offshore exploration projects.
This measure aims to position Nigeria’s deep offshore basin as a premier destination for international oil and gas investments, boosting the country’s appeal to foreign investors.
These reforms are part of a broader set of policy initiatives, known as Policy Directives 40-42, endorsed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The directives reflect the administration’s commitment to fostering sustainable development in the energy sector and enhancing Nigeria’s competitive edge in the global oil and gas market.
