English Football International, Ivan Toney, Bags Eight-Month Ban, Fine

Published

on

English striker Ivan Toney, who plays for Brentford and the national team, has received an eight-month ban from football and a £50,000 ($63,000) fine due to 232 violations of the Football Association’s (FA) betting regulations, according to an announcement made by the governing body on Wednesday.

Until his suspension concludes on January 16, 2024, Toney will be unable to participate in any matches for both his club and the national team.

In addition to the disciplinary measures, the 27-year-old has been cautioned about his future behavior.

The penalties were handed down by the Football Association, after the Brentford forward admitted to 232 out of 262 breaches for which he has been under investigation over a four-year period.

“The Brentford forward was charged with 262 breaches of FA Rule E8 in total between 25 February 2017 and 23 January 2021,” the FA said. “The FA subsequently withdrew 30 of these breaches and he admitted to the remaining 232.”

Following a personal hearing, an independent regulatory commission imposed the sanctions on Ivan Toney.

The striker will have the opportunity to resume training during the last four months of his eight-month suspension, commencing on September 17, 2023.

“Brentford FC is currently awaiting the publication of the written reasons of the independent Regulatory Commission. We will review them before considering our next steps,” the Premier League club said.

His absence will be a huge blow for the team after his goals played a key role in their rise to ninth place in the Premier League heading into the last two games of the season.

Australian Tennis Champion, Max Purcell Faces Doping Suspension

Published

on

Australian doubles champion, Max Purcell has been provisionally suspended after admitting to a violation of anti-doping regulations, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced on Monday.

The 26-year-old, ranked 12th in the world for doubles, confessed to using a “prohibited method” and voluntarily entered a provisional suspension beginning December 10.

The ITIA confirmed the suspension took full effect on December 12, stating, “Time served under provisional suspension will be credited against any future sanction.”

As a result of the suspension, the 26-year-old is banned from competing in, coaching at, or attending any tennis events sanctioned by the sport’s governing bodies.

This suspension rules him out of January’s Australian Open, where he was expected to be a strong contender.

Purcell’s career highlights include winning the 2022 Wimbledon doubles title with fellow Australian Matt Ebden and this year’s US Open doubles crown alongside Jordan Thompson.

In a statement, Tennis Australia clarified that the violation concerned a prohibited method rather than a banned substance.

“The International Tennis Integrity Agency confirmed the breach relates to the use of a prohibited method, rather than the presence of a prohibited substance.

“As the matter is currently under investigation, it is inappropriate to comment further at this time,” it said.

The ITIA did not provide further details regarding the breach but noted that investigations are ongoing.

This case comes amid increased scrutiny over doping in tennis. Recent incidents include Polish world number two Iga Swiatek and Italian top-ranked player Jannik Sinner.

Swiatek received a one-month sanction earlier this year after testing positive for a banned heart medication, though the violation was deemed unintentional.

Meanwhile, Sinner was cleared after twice testing positive for traces of the steroid clostebol, though the World Anti-Doping Agency has appealed the decision.

Both Swiatek and Sinner are set to compete in the Australian Open, beginning January 12.
