J. Cole Reveals Why He Avoided Controversy With Kendrick Lamar

Published

on

American rapper J. Cole recently opened up about his decision to retract a diss track aimed at fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar, shedding light on the reasons behind his choice to avoid a public feud.

In an interview and through lyrics in his latest single, Port Antonio, J. Cole explained that the initial diss track, 7 Minute Drill, was his response to Lamar’s subtle jab at him and Drake in the song ‘Like That’, a collaboration with Future and Metro Boomin.

In the track, J. Cole rapped that Lamar had “fallen off like the Simpsons,” marking a brief but heated moment between the two artists.

However, in a surprising turn of events, J. Cole took a step back during his performance at the 2024 Dreamville Festival in North Carolina this April, pausing mid-set to issue an apology to Kendrick Lamar.

This move stunned fans and the hip-hop community, who had been anticipating a potential rap battle between the two.

In his new single Port Antonio, J. Cole reflected on why he decided to walk away from the controversy. He revealed that the promoters of the beef were looking for “blood” and publicity, aiming to profit from the conflict. J. Cole realized that pursuing the feud would not only create unnecessary enmity with Kendrick Lamar but also harm their relationship.

“I pulled the plug because I saw where that was about to go, they wanted blood, they wanted clicks to make their pockets grow,” Cole rapped. He expressed that the conflict would have resulted in gaining a foe while losing a friend, saying, “I wouldn’t have lost the battle, dog, I would’ve lost a bro, I would’ve gained a foe, and all for what?”

J. Cole’s decision to step back from the feud highlights his maturity and focus on preserving meaningful relationships over giving in to the pressures of creating drama for public consumption.

Fans and critics alike have praised his move, seeing it as a testament to his character in an industry often fueled by controversy.

The incident serves as a reminder of the powerful influence media and industry players can have in shaping narratives, with J. Cole choosing to prioritize long-term respect over short-term gain.

As the rap world continues to buzz with speculation, J. Cole’s candid revelation has sparked conversations about authenticity, brotherhood, and the impact of public feuds in the music industry.

Prior to his release, Speed Darlington had petitioned Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Force Intelligence Bureau, DIG Dasuki Galadanchi, over his prolonged detention. He called on the DIG to comply with a court order directing his release or formal arraignment.

Justice M.S. Liman had earlier issued an order on December 23, 2024, mandating the police to charge the singer within 48 hours or release him unconditionally.

Speed Darlington’s arrest stemmed from allegations he made against Grammy Award-winning singer Burna Boy. The singer accused Burna Boy of being involved in an immoral relationship with embattled U.S. rapper and music executive Sean Combs, also known as P. Diddy.

The situation has sparked widespread discussions, with many Nigerians expressing relief at Speed Darlington’s freedom while others continue to debate the circumstances surrounding his arrest.
