NAHCON Chair Resigns As Allegations Rock Hajj Commission

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Professor Abdullahi Usman, has resigned from office amid allegations of financial and administrative misconduct levelled against him by members of the commission’s board.

Usman confirmed his resignation in a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja, stressing that his decision to step aside was taken for personal reasons and not as a result of any wrongdoing.

His resignation follows reports that the NAHCON board submitted a petition to President Bola Tinubu, accusing the chairman of financial indiscipline, lack of transparency, and repeated violations of procurement and budgetary procedures.

The petition, dated January 19, 2026, and reportedly signed by 11 board members, was titled “Vote of No Confidence in the Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria.”

It alleged that Usman approved expenditures and awarded contracts without board approval and beyond approved financial limits.

The board further accused him of breaching the Bureau of Public Procurement Act by awarding Hajj-related contracts without due process, actions it said exposed the commission to legal, financial, and reputational risks.

The petition also claimed that the former chairman was under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

However, Usman dismissed the allegations, maintaining that his resignation was purely personal.

“It is with deep reflection and gratitude to Allah SWT that I announce my resignation from the office of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, effective Monday, February 9, 2026,” he said.

“I wish to state unequivocally that this decision is taken entirely for personal reasons after prayerful contemplation and consultation with my family.”

He disclosed that his resignation was formally submitted to President Tinubu in accordance with Section 3(6) of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2006.

Usman expressed appreciation to the President for the opportunity to serve, as well as to Vice President Kashim Shettima for his support during his tenure.

He also thanked the NAHCON board, management, staff, state pilgrims’ welfare agencies, tour operators, aviation service providers, and Nigerian officials in Saudi Arabia for their cooperation.

Reiterating his position, Usman said his resignation did not stem from dissatisfaction with the commission or the government.

Before his resignation, his last official engagement was the reception of Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Dr. Tawfiq Al-Rabiah, during a visit to Abuja last week.
