New Naira: APC Chieftain Urges FG To Obey Court Rulling
Abdullahi Shinkafi, an APC chieftain in Zamfara State, has called on the Federal Government to permit the use of old naira notes concurrently with the redesigned notes, in accordance with the Supreme Court judgement.
Shinkafi urged President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to uphold the rule of law during a press conference in Gusau on Friday.
“President Muhammadu Buhari must respect the Supreme Court’s verdict and allow both the new and old naira notes to exist concurrently until December 31 as the court ordered.” he said.
According to him, since the Supreme Court has ruled that the old and the new naira notes remain legal tender, there is nobody in the country, no matter how highly placed, can violate the order.
“I am calling on President Buhari to respect the court order and quickly instruct the Central Bank of Nigeria to release the notes back into circulation.
“This is not how advanced countries change their currencies,” he added.
Shinkafi also appealed to Deposit Money Banks to release both old and new notes as directed by the court.
He expressed concern about the adverse effects of the new naira policy on Nigerians, who he claims have been impoverished since the cashless policy was introduced.
He said the President was not properly advised by the CBN Governor Godwin Emeifele.
According to Shinkafi, other countries like the United States of America, the United Kingdom and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia gradually and systematically replaced their currencies without imposing an expiration date, unlike what is happening in Nigeria with the introduction of the new naira notes.
“There has been change of currencies in countries like USA, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and other advanced countries but they don’t abruptly stop old notes from circulation.
“What they normally do is that, they allow the old notes to go with the new ones concurrently until the old ones finally return to the banks and they never release them again,” Shinkafi said.
He commended governors of Zamfara, Kaduna and Kogi states for their doggedness which he said would save the country from collapse.
He further advised the governors to return to court in the event that the President, the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN) and the CBN refused to abide by the Supreme Court order.
“The governors have powers to apply for enforcement of form (48), contempt of court charge and form (49), committal to prison so that all the actors who chose to disregard the decision of the Apex Court could be taken to prison outrightly,” he said.
The APC stalwart urged Nigerians to continue using both old and new naira notes until December 31 as ordered by the Supreme Court.

A gas cylinder explosion at a filling station in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State has resulted in significant damage to six vehicles, according to a statement from the Katsina State Police Command.
The command’s spokesperson, Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Friday, November 15, 2024.
He explained that a loud explosion alerted police operatives from the Jibia Divisional Police Headquarters. Responding promptly, the Divisional Police Officer led a team to the site, supported by military personnel.

“Upon arrival, operatives found a truck loaded with gas cylinders engulfed in flames at Tamal filling station, along Kagadama-Magamar Jibia Road,” Sadiq-Aliyu stated. The joint team acted swiftly, deploying measures to protect lives and limit property damage. Their efforts successfully extinguished the fire.
The spokesperson added, “Six motor vehicles were significantly affected by the fire incident, but fortunately, no life was lost.”
State Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Abubakar-Musa, has directed a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. Updates on the findings will be provided as investigations progress.
This incident highlights the need for heightened safety measures at gas filling stations to prevent such occurrences.
