New naira: FCT market women decry low sales
Traders in the Federal Capital Territory expressed frustration over a decline in business due to the difficulty in obtaining the newly introduced naira notes.
According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria, the women traders claimed that the low circulation of the new currency has significantly impacted their sales.
Reporters visiting local markets found that many of the women, particularly those selling perishable goods, have been relying on electronic transfers as a means of conducting business.
As reported by NAN, the shortage of the new naira notes has forced some of the market women, who previously didn’t have bank accounts, to open one in order to adapt to the current situation.
Ngozi Kalu, a food vendor at the Garki International Modern Market, spoke to NAN about her struggles in the wake of the naira scarcity. According to Kalu, she had been unable to make any sales for nearly two days as customers complained about not having physical cash, and she herself lacked a bank account.
“When customers come, they complain that they do not have cash to pay and ask if they can transfer.
“I do not have a bank account, so if they do not have the cash to pay me, they go somewhere else to try.
“That is how I have missed so many sales for two days. I wish I had a bank account,” she said.
Another trader, referred to only as Mama Victor, spoke to NAN about her experiences with the naira shortage. Despite having a bank account, Mama Victor reported limited sales as her customers were able to make transfers to her account instead of paying in physical currency.
“Some customers come and ask if they can transfer, so I give them my account number.
“That is the only way I have been making sales because there is no money anywhere. Even the PoS operators do not have money.”
A shopper, Efosa Paul, shared her experience with the shortage of the new naira notes. Paul explained how she was forced to obtain cash from a market woman, but had to pay an additional fee for the service.
“I needed cash to buy some items and one of the market women offered to give me cash at a fee. She gave me N5,000 but I transferred N5,500 into her account.
“Some people are making brisk business from this whole situation we are in.”

A gas cylinder explosion at a filling station in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State has resulted in significant damage to six vehicles, according to a statement from the Katsina State Police Command.
The command’s spokesperson, Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Friday, November 15, 2024.
He explained that a loud explosion alerted police operatives from the Jibia Divisional Police Headquarters. Responding promptly, the Divisional Police Officer led a team to the site, supported by military personnel.

“Upon arrival, operatives found a truck loaded with gas cylinders engulfed in flames at Tamal filling station, along Kagadama-Magamar Jibia Road,” Sadiq-Aliyu stated. The joint team acted swiftly, deploying measures to protect lives and limit property damage. Their efforts successfully extinguished the fire.
The spokesperson added, “Six motor vehicles were significantly affected by the fire incident, but fortunately, no life was lost.”
State Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Abubakar-Musa, has directed a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. Updates on the findings will be provided as investigations progress.
This incident highlights the need for heightened safety measures at gas filling stations to prevent such occurrences.
