Nigerian Celebrities Whose Marriages Ended In 2022
Several celebrities have faced marriage troubles in the entertainment industry this year. Here are some notable examples:
Basketmouth
Popular comedian and actor Bright Okpocha, also known as Basketmouth, announced on December 22, 2022 that he and his wife, Elsie, were ending their 12-year marriage. He asked for privacy as they navigated this difficult time and vowed to continue working together to support their children.
He wrote, “As much as it pains me to bring my personal life to the public space, this is an unavoidable situation. After much deliberation, my wife and I have made the difficult decision to end our marriage.
“As we move forward separately, we will continue to work together to give our beautiful children all the care, love, guidance and support they need. We humbly ask that you respect our privacy as we navigate through these times. Thank you.”
Oritsefemi
In October 2022, singer Oritsefemi Majemite’s wife, Nabila Fash, revealed that their marriage had ended during an Instagram Live session with media personality Daddy Freeze. Fash accused Oritsefemi of infidelity, physical abuse, and emotional abuse, and said that she had filed for divorce three months prior but he had not accepted it. The couple married in 2017.
Do2dtun
On-air personality Kayode Oladotun, also known as Do2dtun, and his estranged wife, Omotayo, have been involved in a messy divorce case. In November 2021, Omotayo instituted divorce proceedings, alleging emotional abuse, domestic violence, and forced abortion.
On December 14, 2022, Do2dtun allegedly forcibly entered Omotayo’s residence in Abuja with some policemen, assaulting her gateman and staff. Omotayo later petitioned the Deputy Inspector-General of Police over the incident. Do2dtun denied the allegations and claimed that his wife’s family and lawyers were spreading lies about him.
Funke Akindele
Actress, filmmaker, and Peoples Democratic Party deputy governorship candidate in Lagos State Funke Akindele married singer and filmmaker Abdulrasheed Bello, also known as JJC Skillz, in May 2016. In June 2022, Skillz announced on Instagram that the couple had separated, saying that the last two years had been difficult and that he had tried to fix things but believed the relationship was beyond repair.
Yewande Adekoya
In April 2022, actress and filmmaker Yewande Adekoya announced that she had left her marriage due to infidelity and financial irresponsibility on the part of her husband, Abiodun Thomas. In an Instagram post, she said that she had tried to save the marriage but could not continue living in a toxic and unhealthy environment.
Korra Obidi
In March 2022, singer and dancer Korra Obidi announced her separation from her American husband, Justin Dean, just days after the couple welcomed their second child.
Dean took to Instagram to explain the reasons for the split, stating that he was tired of the narcissism, cheating, and lack of accountability in the relationship. He also revealed that he had been trying to save the marriage since 2018, but that Obidi had threatened to divorce him if he didn’t do exactly as she wanted.
Dean claimed that he had felt like a prisoner, with his family being used against him if he didn’t comply with Obidi’s demands. Despite his efforts to make the relationship work, Dean stated that the marriage was over and that he could no longer be treated this way.
Controversial Nigerian singer Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington or Akpi, has been released from Kuje Prison following a court directive.
Activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju disclosed this development on Tuesday, stating on X (formerly Twitter), “Speed Darlington is out of Kuje Prison.”
The singer’s release came after an Abuja court granted him bail. This decision followed intense public pressure on the Nigeria Police Force, which led to his arraignment.

Prior to his release, Speed Darlington had petitioned Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Force Intelligence Bureau, DIG Dasuki Galadanchi, over his prolonged detention. He called on the DIG to comply with a court order directing his release or formal arraignment.
Justice M.S. Liman had earlier issued an order on December 23, 2024, mandating the police to charge the singer within 48 hours or release him unconditionally.
Speed Darlington’s arrest stemmed from allegations he made against Grammy Award-winning singer Burna Boy. The singer accused Burna Boy of being involved in an immoral relationship with embattled U.S. rapper and music executive Sean Combs, also known as P. Diddy.
The situation has sparked widespread discussions, with many Nigerians expressing relief at Speed Darlington’s freedom while others continue to debate the circumstances surrounding his arrest.
Veteran Nollywood actor, Dele Odule, has opened up about the most heartbreaking moment of his life, revealing it was when he lost his first child.
The 63-year-old Yoruba movie icon shared the emotional experience during an interview with his colleague, Kunle Afod, recounting how the loss deeply affected him, especially given the challenges surrounding the child’s birth.

Odule described the tragic news as “very hard” to bear, adding that he has since come to accept it as the will of God. Despite the acceptance, the actor expressed his fervent hope never to endure such a devastating tragedy again.
He said, “The saddest moment of my life was when I was called that my first child died. It was very hard on me. It was hard because of the situation faced during the child’s birth, but no one can question God’s authority. It was so bad that I don’t pray for it anymore.”
Known for his roles in classic Yoruba films, Odule continues to share both his professional and personal experiences, endearing himself to fans and colleagues alike.
In early January 2025, Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Burna Boy fulfilled a promise by gifting $30,000 to Bethel Okechukwu, a phone repairer from Alaba Market who had claimed to be related to socialite Cubana Chief Priest.
This act of generosity occurred amid an ongoing feud between Burna Boy and the Cubana Chief Priest.

Following the donation, Cubana Chief Priest clarified that Bethel Okechukwu is not his brother, stating, “I have only one biological big brother & two kid sisters. They ain’t doing so bad.” He emphasized that he is not obligated to support his siblings financially and urged the public to verify such claims.
As of now, there are no credible reports indicating that Burna Boy instructed Bethel Okechukwu to take any specific actions towards Cubana Chief Priest after receiving the $30,000. The narrative appears to be centered around Burna Boy’s charitable gesture and Cubana Chief Priest’s subsequent clarification regarding his familial relationships.
