Omotola Opens Up On Death Threats Against Her Family During #EndSARS

Published

on

Veteran Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has revealed that her family, particularly her children, received death threats during the height of the #EndSARS protests, an experience she says deeply affected her activism and personal life.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Rubbin’ Minds, Omotola disclosed that while she had previously faced threats due to her public advocacy, the situation became frightening when the intimidation extended to her children.

According to the actress, the threats against her family marked a turning point.

“I am used to death threats; I have received them many times. But during EndSARS, it became intense. My children started getting death threats, and that was when it became real for me,” she said.

She explained that the situation escalated further when unknown individuals reportedly began looking for her at her home and workplace, forcing her to reassess her safety and that of her loved ones.

“When people started coming to my home and workplace looking for me, I knew it was time to think beyond myself. I had to protect others, especially my children,” Omotola added.

The actress noted that the experience influenced her decision to step back from street protests and adopt a more strategic approach to advocacy, particularly as her children grew more independent.

“I can’t control where they go anymore. I may not care about my life, but I care deeply about theirs,” she said.

The #EndSARS movement, which erupted in October 2020, was a nationwide protest against police brutality, especially alleged abuses linked to the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Protesters accused the unit of harassment, extortion, unlawful arrests, and extrajudicial killings, particularly targeting young Nigerians.

The movement gained nationwide and international attention following reports of violence against protesters, with the Lekki Toll Gate incident of October 20, 2020, becoming its defining moment.

Omotola was among several celebrities who joined protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos.

However, she later faced public criticism over comments she made following the incident, which many Nigerians interpreted as insensitive.

She subsequently apologised, clarifying that she did not dispute reports of deaths and emphasised that the alleged attack itself constituted a serious crime.

In response to the protests, the Federal Government announced the disbandment of SARS and introduced the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit.

Despite this, protesters continued to demand broader police reforms, accountability for officers involved in abuses, justice for victims, and improved welfare for police personnel.

According to sources, the autopsy revealed that one of the victims had an empty stomach, while the other had only a small amount of food — “almost as if he hadn’t eaten anything,” a source said.

Walter Odediran’s elder brother, Kola Odediran, confirmed that the family had received the preliminary autopsy report. He said: “The autopsy itself is complete, and no food was found in my late brother.

“The results indicate he did not eat anything. But they are going to carry out toxicology and histology tests, which will provide the definitive answers we are looking for.”

To determine the exact cause of death, experts will conduct additional tests on blood and tissue samples to find out whether the victims ingested or inhaled any harmful substances before their deaths.

These results are expected in two to three weeks.

Relatives of the deceased, as well as colleagues in the Nollywood industry, are awaiting the findings with bated breath, hoping the upcoming tests will shed light on the mysterious circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
