Reject Minimum Wage Below N250k – Frank Tells Labour Unions
Comrade Timi Frank, the former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has called upon the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to firmly oppose any minimum wage offer below N250,000 from the federal government.
Frank’s call comes in response to unconfirmed reports indicating a proposed wage increase of N105,000 for workers during ongoing tripartite negotiations.
While the Presidency has refuted these claims, Frank has accused the administration of double standards, particularly in the context of proposed salary adjustments.
He said “any amount below N250,000.00 cannot be considered a decent wage for Nigerian workers considering the present socio-economic hardship in the country.”
Notably, he highlighted a recent bill forwarded by the President Bola Tinubu-led administration seeking a substantial 300% increase in salaries and allowances for various judicial office-holders.
Frank contends that such actions underscore the need for equitable treatment of Nigerian workers amidst prevailing socio-economic challenges.
The Bayelsa-born political activist pointed out that President Bola Tinubu recently submitted a bill to the National Assembly, proposing a 300% increase in the salaries and allowances of various judicial office-holders, including Supreme Court Justices, Appeal Court Justices, the President of the National Industrial Court, Judges of the Federal and State High Courts, as well as Grand Khadi of State Sharia Courts.
He emphasized that the bill was swiftly passed in both chambers of the National Assembly as per the President’s proposal and is now awaiting the President’s assent to become enforceable law.
Frank, who serves as the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East, questioned the rationale behind proposing a 300% increase in the salaries of judicial office-holders who already receive substantial incomes.
He said, “How can you increase the salary of an arm of government that is already earning a humongous salary by 300 per cent and add peanuts to the paltry N30,000 that workers have been compelled to live with in this country as minimum wage in the last five years?
“Why did the President send an Executive Bill to the National Assembly to effect a 300 per cent upward review in the salaries of Judicial Office Holders but set up a tripartite committee to negotiate a “starvation wage” (apologies to NLC President Joe Ajaero) for suffering Nigerian workers instead of a “living wage” he promised them on assumption of office in May last year?”

Fire Ravages Indonesia Market, Kills 11 Including Six Children
At least 11 people, including six children, have died after a fire swept through a market and surrounding buildings in Indonesia’s easternmost Papua region.

According to local police spokesman Henry J. Manurung, firefighters battled the inferno for more than three hours before eventually bringing it under control.
“During the inspection, officers found 11 victims who had died with burn injuries,” Manurung said in a statement.
He said five of the victims were adults, while the other six were children aged between two and nine years.
The fire destroyed at least 40 kiosks and houses despite the deployment of fire trucks and water cannons by emergency responders.
Manurung said the tightly packed arrangement of the houses and market stalls contributed to the rapid spread of the flames and made firefighting operations more difficult.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the deadly fire.
The incident adds to a series of deadly fires recorded in Indonesia in recent years.
In December, 22 people were killed when fire swept through a seven-storey office building in Central Jakarta. Police said an exploding drone battery on the ground floor was the likely cause.
In 2023, an explosion at a nickel-processing plant in eastern Indonesia also claimed at least 12 lives.
The latest tragedy has left the Paniai community mourning as authorities continue efforts to establish what triggered the devastating blaze.
