Saudi League In Shock As Ronaldo Refuses To Play Against Al-Riyadh

Cristiano Ronaldo has once again made headlines by refusing to feature in Al-Nassr’s Saudi Pro League clash against Al-Riyadh today, despite being fully fit.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, who turns 41 on February 5, is reportedly frustrated with his club’s management and the level of support compared to rivals.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano and sources cited by Planet Football, Ronaldo believes Al-Nassr have not received the same backing as Al-Hilal, who are leading the league and reportedly close to signing Karim Benzema.

“Sources close to the situation indicated that Ronaldo was unhappy with how Al-Nassr were being supported by the Saudi Public Investment Fund, which owns a majority stake in the league’s four biggest clubs,” Planet Football reported.

Ronaldo is still chasing his first league title with Al-Nassr but is said to be frustrated by a quiet January transfer window. His decision to sit out today’s match is widely seen as a clear message of protest.

This is not the first time Ronaldo has made such a stance.

In Manchester United 2022, Ronaldo refused to come on as a late substitute against Tottenham Hotspur, leaving the stadium before the final whistle.

His contract was terminated by mutual consent shortly after.

Juventus, 2021: Ronaldo asked not to be selected for the opening match against Empoli, signaling his desire to leave. Juventus lost 1–0, and Ronaldo returned to Manchester United shortly afterward.

Ronaldo’s absence today has sent shockwaves through the Saudi League, leaving fans and pundits questioning whether Al-Nassr can maintain their title ambitions without their superstar forward.
